Car not applying handbrake automatically when switching off

Hi if anyone can help me figure this out we’ve had our sportage for 18 months now and recently it’s been applying Park when switching off the car rather than the handbrake we’ve noticed this as it rolls either back or forward but this has never happened since we’ve had the car until now. Is there anything we can do to have the handbrake come on automatically when switching off the car rather than Park.

I believe there was a thread sometime ago that said if you let the Parking brake come on automatically when the engine is switched off then for some reason when you exit the car, the rear doors will still be locked. If you operate the Parking brake manually (using mr.macspot’s method), then the rear doors will unlock at the same time as the fronts.

Found the thread here……

@mr.macspot - That’s exactly my problem as well, so now I do the same as you, footbrake on (auto hold operates), push ‘P’, then engine off.
I just got fed up with getting out, shutting the drivers door, then encountering a locked rear door when trying to retrieve my coat from the back seat, and having to reopen the drivers door to get to the unlock switch. 🤬

I can’t say that I have ever noticed the rear passenger doors remaining locked after coming to a halt and disembarking passengers. I’ll need to check as I always select Autohold before setting off which provides, by a single press of the stop/start button, the automatic selection of Park and the application of the EPB.

Not sure what half the fuss is here. Pull up, stop button, get out, grab child from back seat and press door lock button on way past.

Have probably pressed park less than 5 times in 12,000 miles and handbrake 2 or 3 times whilst messing about at traffic lights.

As above, I have my car set to what I want so thats auto lock off, auto mirrors closing off, and I turn lane assist off every time I start the car.
I also turn off auto hold before entering the garage to prevent the parking brake applying, this prevents the brake discs from sticking on if parked wet. I then set auto hold on again when starting up
