Apologies for asking but it has not been mentioned so far, what are the software/firmware versions that are on your car? The actual full number not just the last update date.

In theory the car should tell you if the if the package incorrect, but it will do no harm to check that the version that is being downloaded is what you are expecting.
The software version that needs to be download is SG2_H.EUR.S5W_L.001.001.221129. If you look at the download files there is a version file (on mine it is Sportage_MY18_EU.ver), open the file (I use Windows Notepad, but any text reader will do) and the first line of text should identify the version number.
My other thought is a possible USB socket fault, can you play USB music, or does you phone connect to the head unit when plugged in?

Thanks. I have SG2_H.EUR.S5W_L.001.001.221129 which is correct.

I can play mp3 file from the USB stick but occasionally the stick becomes disconnected for few seconds then reconnects. It's done this now on 3 USB sticks. The dealer is going to check this next week.

That could well be why the software is failing to update. Make sure they sort it out, the media system is not covered by the 7 year warranty and tell them about your update issue.

I've now tried using a USB 2.0 stick. I think it's doing the update since when I just turned on the car the screen is dark. How long does this take since it's been 2 hours now? Should I press the recessed system reset button if the screen stays dark? There is no indication of a progress indicator.

Should not be more than a couple of hours.

When you went into the car to check, did you turn car on?
I just checked now. I turned the car on after 3.25 hours and the screen is still blank. My interim check had the car on too. There was a feint glow from the screen when the car is off and locked. I also got a 12V battery warning on the app. I've now done a system reset and see the software didn't update and I've left the car on a while to charge the 12V battery. I think I'll refer this issue to the dealer now.

The dealer successfully installed the update in my new Niro 3 HEV yesterday. The service manager said HEVs are difficult to update. The car needs to be on ideally with the engine running which he does by turning on the aircon. This advice is at odds with several users posting above.
