USB Software Update - Help Needed

My new Niro 3 HEV was supplied with the November update ending 221007. I've just downloaded the latest December update ending 221129 onto to new USB memory stick.

I turned the car on and selected General in Settings screen then selected Version Info / Update then Update. It then spent about 15 minutes validating the files then displayed a screen starting the update at 0% saying the update would proceed when the car was turned off. I didn't do anything then an an error appeared saying the update had failed and to check with a Kia dealer. The car is still on the old version 221007 and seems OK.

Have I done something wrong here?

Did you find out which USB they use?

I know you have had issues & the dealer has updated for you. I still think the issue is the USB.

Given yours is a new Niro. They would not have had to update many, is any at all. Given the last (so only one for your car) update was in November/December.

As well as it is known that dealers are directing people to self update given the time it saves then for the £40 Kia approved cost.

Would be interesting for you to try the update that has been released in the last week with the engine turned on to see if it works, with your USB stick (y)

The Service Manger advised he used his own drive which is a SanDisk Ultra USB 3.0 512GB and differs from the two sticks I tried. I might get a 64GB+ version of that drive to see if it works when I try an update.

I can't get mine to work, I have tried two different 128 Gb Sandisk USB drives but after a few seconds when it says reading the drive I get a message which says no media files available. My dealer has said book it in and they will do it so I think I will. After this update apparently OTA updates will be enabled which will ease things considerably I suspect.

The first time (May-update) I did the update with shut-down car I got also this message, the second time (December-update) not, all was ok. My idea is, that I was to quick by the first update to remove the USB-stick before the car was started and the infotainment system ok. The second time I started the car, went to the system update page, checked the update-dates and then I removed the stick....

I've done two USB updates now. The first was using a 128gb Micro SD Card plugged in to a USB adapter. Took ages (probably well over an hour), but did work.

I've since purhcased a 64GB Sandisk USB 3 stick and yesterday's update went much faster.

All I did was plug the stick in, turn on, go to the settings page and a minute or so later, it popped up asking I wanted to update.

Ooddly, it will keep asking if you want to update to what's on the stick if you leave it in, even if you're now on the same version that's on the stick!

I've now raised my concerns (see below) with Kia UK about various USB related issues which have now been sent to Kia's Quality Team who have opened a case with Kia Europe engineers. Let's see if Kia improve their software and documentation.

I’ve now been using the infotainment system on my new Niro 3 HEV with various USB sticks for some time. I consider your infotainment software and documentation needs improvement in the following respects. Please forward this email to your relevant software development team for action. These issues would cause me to knock points off your customer satisfaction score if surveyed. I’ve included links to the Kia Forums where these issues are discussed and corroborated by other new Niro owners. These various USB issues suggest the Kia infotainment system is not compliant with the USB standards since there should be no issue playing files from any USB stick provided it is formatted in accordance with Kia’s requirements and of sufficient capacity.

  1. Software update via USB stick failed for me but was done by the dealer by using a different USB stick and keeping the engine running with the aircon on. The update instructions on Kia’s web site are most unclear particularly with regard to having the Niro on or off during the update. See USB Software Update - Help Needed
  2. USB music playback of mp3 files drops out occasionally with the message ‘media disconnected’ then restarts after a few seconds with various USB sticks. See USB Music Playback Random Disconnects
  3. Album art is sometimes not correctly displayed.
  4. There is no ability to play music from a playlist. This is an essential feature and should be provided in a future upgrade.
