My new Niro 3 HEV was supplied with the November update ending 221007. I've just downloaded the latest December update ending 221129 onto to new USB memory stick.

I turned the car on and selected General in Settings screen then selected Version Info / Update then Update. It then spent about 15 minutes validating the files then displayed a screen starting the update at 0% saying the update would proceed when the car was turned off. I didn't do anything then an an error appeared saying the update had failed and to check with a Kia dealer. The car is still on the old version 221007 and seems OK.

Have I done something wrong here?

I updated my Niro EV 3 successfully with the December update doing the same procedure you outlined and left the car “on” until it completed (which took nearly an hour if I remember correctly). I had first put the car into utility mode before starting the update (prevents the 12v battery draining). I then plugged the usb stick in AFTER I had first selected the update page on the infotainment screen. I came out of utility mode after successful completion of the update. Hope that might work for you.

You do not..

You need to redownload the files. making sure they are the correct ones using versions numbers. Let the APP format & transfer files. If it does not work again. Then it could be the USB drive you are using. They can affect updates. I ended up trying 3 before I found one that worked.
See below for the one that worked.

Turn car on, then insert USB. It will then ask if you want to update after turning car off. Just turn car off, lock as normal & go enjoy a coffee till you get the message on connect that it has finished.

I have a MY22 Sportage and back in September I tried to update the previous update and got a similar thing. I ended up getting it done at a dealer. Earlier this month I tried to do the latest update and got the same message. This time though I brought a new USB stick, only a cheap one ÂŁ9.99 from Argos. Loaded the update on it and this time it worked. So if you've got another USB stick give it a go.
The first one was USB 3.1 and the second one was the older 2.0. Don't know if this is the problem but you don't know.

I'm using a new Kingston Data Traveler Kyson 128GB USB 3.0 stick. I have occasional mp3 file playback dropouts in several USB sticks so I'm wondering if there is an issue with the USB connector in the car - dealer to check.

Yes..
I update mine with car turned off all the time.

No way am I sitting in the car waiting for it to run it's process, when they is a nice warm house to sit in & not waste any fuel.

Why would you think it needs car turned on, when it is telling you it will update when car is turned off?

The information published by Kia is very confusing like this Notice | Official Kia Navigation Update Website

Warning:
1) During vehicle software installation, engine must be running to keep the battery charged Do not turn off the ignition switch or eject SD card/USB during upgrade procedure.
2) Updating navigation while idling may violate the relevant traffic regulation Please be sure to comply with your local traffic regulations before proceeding with the update.
3) How to double check your car is running - The start switch should indicate "ON" or the light on the start button is lit - a software update could effect the functionality of aftermarket components (i.g. aftermarket rear view camera, speakers, etc.)

An authoritative step by step guide is needed from Kia.

So are you downloading files onto PC & then using APP to transfer to USB stick, or are they going direct to USB stick?
Try doing the opposite of what you have been doing to see if that works.

Is APP formatting USB?

If you turned the car off how did you know it had failed?

Sadly I had 2 new USB sticks that did not work for updates, but work for everything else.

Sorry if questions sound stupid, but trying to get my head round how you are doing things (y)

I'm using the app to download the files, format the USB drive and copy the files to the USB stick. After turning the car off, a screen appeared after only a minute or so saying the update had failed. I'm not inclined to keep buying large USB drives until I find one which works!

This is what the update tool currently shows with the USB drive containing the update inserted in the PC:

In theory the car should tell you if the if the package incorrect, but it will do no harm to check that the version that is being downloaded is what you are expecting.
The software version that needs to be download is SG2_H.EUR.S5W_L.001.001.221129. If you look at the download files there is a version file (on mine it is Sportage_MY18_EU.ver), open the file (I use Windows Notepad, but any text reader will do) and the first line of text should identify the version number.
My other thought is a possible USB socket fault, can you play USB music, or does you phone connect to the head unit when plugged in?

Thanks. I have SG2_H.EUR.S5W_L.001.001.221129 which is correct.

I can play mp3 file from the USB stick but occasionally the stick becomes disconnected for few seconds then reconnects. It's done this now on 3 USB sticks. The dealer is going to check this next week.

I've now tried using a USB 2.0 stick. I think it's doing the update since when I just turned on the car the screen is dark. How long does this take since it's been 2 hours now? Should I press the recessed system reset button if the screen stays dark? There is no indication of a progress indicator.

I just checked now. I turned the car on after 3.25 hours and the screen is still blank. My interim check had the car on too. There was a feint glow from the screen when the car is off and locked. I also got a 12V battery warning on the app. I've now done a system reset and see the software didn't update and I've left the car on a while to charge the 12V battery. I think I'll refer this issue to the dealer now.

The dealer successfully installed the update in my new Niro 3 HEV yesterday. The service manager said HEVs are difficult to update. The car needs to be on ideally with the engine running which he does by turning on the aircon. This advice is at odds with several users posting above.

So i have the USB loaded up ready to go. Do I need to switch on my MY23 HEV 4 and then wait until it tells me to turn off? I have asked Kia Customer Support about leaving the car on who said he would go away and try to find the answer. Finally I received this.

The update will not drain the battery
Just keep the engine on for 30 min
I asked our support team for you
But he said that will not drain your vehicle battery

Does this jive with your experience?

Yes, it took a long time to download the update also here in the Netherlands, 3,5h(!) with max. 2,5MB/s ... then transfer to my USB-stick 1h (it's an old slow one).
In the car I used update after switch-off so I had not to wait. After 45 min I got the message on my phone, that the update was successfully done.
Only the versions of the software and the firmware has been changed not nav and maps.

I just start car, insert USB. It starts process & asks if you if you want to start after turned off. I just select this option & turn car off.
Never had any battery issues.
Even if you did, in a HEV you have the battery reset option.

Sadly my experience is at odds with the "Service Manger" in the above post.
