Towbar electrics. Where to cut into the wiring?

Hello

I recently fitted a towbar to my Venga. Mechanically, all fine. Now for the electrics.

Where, please, is the best place to cut into the existing wiring in order to hook up the new cable? Is there a recommended video? Is it just a case of checking with a multimeter when the circuit is in use and proceeding in that manner around the necessary lights?

I have removed the inner panels to reveal the wiring on the pics.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thanks, but it's well out of warranty.

Can anyone help, please? All the videos online look so simple. The bloke opens up the boot, removes the panels, finds the 1 wire carrying the voltage for the lights, indicators, etc., taps into each and that's it.

On the Venga, though, the wires from the relay aren't even long enough to simultaneously connect to wires on both sides of the car (as per the photo). They don't come close to going across the boot bay.

Presumably, finding the point where the right and left sides split will be in the bowels of the car somewhere. And even if I did find that point and tapped in, the cable to the towbar socket would, from there, never reach the relay.

Mystified...

Hello

Yes I did, thanks. It works a treat now. Took me a while (because I struggled with the wiring), but saved a lot of money. Doddle really, in retrospect, but at points I felt like giving up as it seemed impossible. I'm not suggesting this explanation is perfect, but it worked for me.

Mechanical

I got an Umbra Rimorchi towbar from eBay. The towbar itself is really sturdy and easy to fit, but it needs two people and the right tools.

Take the rear wheels off as you do each side to get at the screws holding the black plastic inner wheel arch covers. Also, you'll need to cut a bit out of each of these arches when you put them back on, as the towbar sticks out slightly into each of them.

Electrical

This was the biggest hurdle for me. I have a TEB7AS relay which was bundled with the towbar. Total cost delivered was about ÂŁ110.

You must get more wire if you use this relay. The TEB7AS wires aren't long enough to go across the boot bay. I used an old piece of electrical cable and just stripped out the inner cores.

The scotch locks it came with were garbage. Bin them, except for the inline fuse holder. Use tape or go for soldering instead for the other connections.

I had to run the black power cable under the car from the positive terminal on the battery and then up through a rubber gromit in the boot. You need to drill a small channel in the plastic cover of the terminal cap to let the wire through before you connect it. I then taped the other end of the black wire to a wire coat hanger, fed it trough the back of the engine (you can see through to the floor), and then I cable tied it under the car to a series of pipes that run under the centre of the car from front to back.

The wiring instructions aren't accurate in 1 key respect (but in all others they are. I had to ring up the relay's manufacturer, and even he wasn't aware of this). I'm not sure if it's an odd combination of factors with the Venga, but it's true.

Connect all 7 wires from the towbar socket to the relay as shown in the instructions.

Have your engine on all the time while you're using a multimeter to check the pins in the rear light cluster sockets.

I installed my relay on the driver's side in the boot, and I removed the inner panels and unclipped the connectors to the rear lights from there. I then tested the electrical circuits there.

CRUCIAL: On my 1.4 diesel 2010 Venga, (and as I'm just using a cycle lightbar), the blue and grey cables (reverse and fog lights) weren't needed, so I taped them up. The black cable from the relay went to the passenger side tail lights. Yellow to passenger side indicator. White to earth (scrape any excess paint off the inner bodywork at the point you're connecting to so you get a good contact). Red is to driver's side brake lights. Green is to driver's side indicator.

CRUCIAL: The instructions said the brown cable should go to the driver's side tail lights, but doing this actually stopped mine working, so I taped it up as well.

Photo below.

I hope that helps you.

All the best.
