Just purchase a Kia Sportage 70 plate, when I picked it up it had. 1/4 of tank in petrol and the mile to empty was 100, I filled it up to full and not it only says 280, is there anyway of resetting this, that definitely can’t be right

If it's been sitting idling or short runs at dealer then the current mpg will be low and it uses that times amount to get your distance. If it's same as my ceed then go to the mpg screen and other fuel/distance menus and hold ok to reset them. Will take a decent distance to settle itself again.

You don't say which type/size of engine you have, but using some simple maths. The fuel tank is around 12 gallons, the estimated mileage on your car is 280, which gives around 22 mpg which to me looks low. In comparison, after a fill up my 2.0 litre diesel shows 450 miles to empty, which is approximately 35 mpg, which is around what I am getting (caravan towing included).
There is no owner reset for the miles to empty, although the Kia dealership may be able to reset it if you ask. I would suggest you keep a record of your mileage between fills and after a couple of refills compare the figures.

As iooi posted - it calculates range from historic data,it should improve as you do some miles (especially on longer journeys).
Also good to remember that winter is not going to give the best MPG figures - next spring might see an improvement.
Edit - just to add that if you fill up after a series of short journeys the computer will give a poor range to go but if you fill up near the end of a longish journey then the actual mpg should have improved and the computer will calculate a better range.

Hi Deborah
Also I forgot to add that one should never take the 'Range' figure as gospel - it is just an estimate by the computer based on previous mpg figure.
I usually 'zero' the trip meter at every fill up and I always calculate a 'safe' range based on previous drives and fuel used.
One of our cars (Grand Vitara) has a 'safe' range of circa 300 mile - the other (diesel Sportage) is circa 400 miles, although the diesel Sportage will do more than that under certain circumstances the Petrol Grand Vitara Auto will not really ever exceed 300 miles as it is not blessed with power LOL :)
