Juddering Sorento

The question of a "juddering" Sorento is one that appears to arise often. My 2007 model 2.5CDi XT TOD Auto suffers the same but I am having difficulty pinning down the exact cause and wonder if any of the knowledgeable individuals here can assist. I have had the vehicle for six months now, and, a little after buying it the trouble began! Essentially, when driving at constant speed there is a slight, but annoying, judder, which is much worse when decelerating. Under acceleration there is no issue. Following investigation the front propshaft has been removed, the sliding element of this freed and a UJ replaced. This did not cure the problem but did prove that the problem does not exist with this shaft removed. The tyres are the same as before the problem manifested and have covered only about 1500 miles since my purchase. Following advice written in this forum I have removed the TCCS fuse (14) and tried the vehicle. it seemed to perform rather sluggishly but without any juddering. With the fuse removed the BRAKE, 4WD Low, 4WD High (the axel icon) & ESP Off warning lamps are all illuminated. I'm assuming this has to be some sort of transfer box problem but am uncertain as to where to go from here. Any incite would be most appreciated.

One point I did not mention in my post was that I have also found that the 4WD Low function does not seem to work. If switched to on then the 4WD Low lamp just flashes constantly. Possibly related so I mention it just in case. Thanks.

The juddering is almost always related to the TOD transfer case.Pull the Transfer case fuse, I think it is nr 13 in the footwell, the dash will light up but that is nothing, take a drive and feel if it is driving normal.
If that fixes the problem, you might want to consider building and installing the "super locker". This basically gives you the control over the clutch in the transfer case.

Send me your email, I will drop everything I have on the super locker in your inbox.

I built and installed it on my 07 and it works 100%.

Thanks for that Marius. That may be the way I have to go. I am just a little suspicious that the onset of the "juddering" and the 4WD Low lock not working came about the same time and therefore wondered if there is any relationship to these two events. I can find no real reference to the significance of the 4WD Low icon blinking constantly, although I must assume perhaps that it means the transfer clutch has not locked. Can't seem to find a PM function on this forum so mail me at martin@[my username].co.uk (just a precaution against the spam bots).Edited by: malegg

are the tyres a matching set including ply rating, it does not take very much wear on these for the TOD to start cutting in giving you the symptoms you are getting, if it is ok with the fuse out then have a good look at the tyres, they rely on all of the tyres having identical rolling radius,

Thanks Andy. I have considered the matter of the tyres previously but dismissed it as a new "set" of tyres was fitted to the vehicle shortly before I purchased it. However, I do now note that, although the tyres look identical, style, tread pattern, the actual brand of the front two does not match the rear (rather like the same tyre marketed under different names). Perhaps I'll try and measure the rolling radius with a calliper. I may have to bite the bullet and try a complete new set to either prove this, or, rule it out! There is probably a good reason, but, I have difficulty understanding, if this is the case, why the TOD does not exhibit any problem under acceleration, i.e under max load. Many posts I've read speak of this as the most frequent symptom. I'll certainly give the tyres a very close examination this weekend. Many thanks indeed.

Take each wheel of and measure the circumference, the largest two need to be on the rear As said different makes have differing side wall construction which will also play a part, that is why best kept to four matching.

Thank you once again Marius. The 4WD lamp only blinks when I try to engage 4WD Low. It is as far as I know supposed to blink for a moment and then remain on to show lock, so, something is wrong there. The superlocker you mentioned could well be how I go ultimately providing nothing else too serious is wrong. I am however surprised that a simple way to just turn off the TOD was never built in! Quite an oversight really.
