My last post on this topic (for a while), I promise :)

I was driving again today and the results I got were pretty strange, or amazing, depends on how you look at it.

I was on much slower roads today and the temperature was 15 degrees - the highest it has been since I got the car. As per most of my recent tests, I drove in eco mode with no heating on. Total journey was 160kms on 80 & 100 km roads.

The first 31 kms of the drive was on an 80kph (50mph) road but the average speed was probably more like 60kph due to traffic etc. I used 5% of the battery, which would indicate an amazing range of 620km!! The dash efficiency was much less optimistic, giving me a total range of 538kms. I'm going to ignore the GOM reading at this point because my motorway driving the other day was contributing to the figure.

My figures for the total journey indicates either 450kms or 516kms, based on dash efficiency figures or % battery used. I've tabulated my recent results below:

DateTempRoad speedDash efficiencyKms drivenGOM estimate% usedefficiency based on %Total based on %
18/02/20251011021.42203875920.91373
20/02/2025158014.531452512.58620
20/02/20251580/10016.31604503115.11516

Obviously the above figures do not correlate with each other at all or with the figures in the app.

So where does this say about my EV3 efficiency? It would obviously be expected that the efficiency figures should be better in warmer temperatures. However, I've been comparing my figures all along to my eNiro, not just a general moan about the EV3 efficiency.

I think my figures today indicate a few possibilities i.e.
  • battery chemistry (or something else) is different in the EV3 compared to the eNiro and the eNiro was able to cope with cooler temps better
  • The car is heating the battery at cooler temps, although the "battery care" shows 0%
The efficiency figures I calculated today based on % battery used would be comparable or better to my eNiro. The dash efficiency would be a bit worse.

While this would appear to be good news, something is different at lower temps compared to the eNiro. Todays figures indicate that the car should easily meet (or exceed) the WLTP figures, just like my eNiro did.

I'm drawing a line under this for now, I'll keep recording stats for submission to Kia - not that it will make any difference.

I have been following this thread and one other for a while now and yesterday I was able to do my first long trip. It was a mix of mostly motorway and dual carriageway. I do not have a heavy right foot and kept speeds around 60-65 mph, with an occasional 70mph. As you can see from the photos that they were 4.1m/kWh and 4m/kWh and the temperatures 11C and 10C. Up to now, with colder weather, I've only been managing around 2.5m/kWh. I really do think the warmer weather will have an impact on all of us. On an another note, I also believe that driving style is important. I've been driving EVs for 4 years now and my driving style/technique is totally different from when I was driving an ICE car. I have adapted to the car to get the best from it.

Don't underestimate the importance of the longer trip, it really makes a difference due to the 'departure tax' that hits short journey with all the costs of warming up the car/battery and then none of the benefits from having done that.

Good to see you getting 4+ results, but don't be disheartened if the numbers drop back on the shorter journeys until the weather warms up further...

Thank you for your information and I do hear what you say, as I have driven EVs through four Winters. I just wish more people could understand and trust their EVs and learn to drive them differently, then maybe, they wouldn't have so many concerns.

An interesting thought. Surely you only drive them differently if you're obsessed with eeking out the battery/range? Otherwise you drive the car to its capabilities and enjoy it.

Maybe a discussion for another thread 😉😉
Sorry to disappoint, but I'm not obsessed with eeking out the range. I just drive and try to anticipate ahead. For instance, I never brake hard at junctions or roundabouts, I just take my foot off the pedal well in advance. I don't use iPedal, just regen level 2. I stick to around 60 - 65mph on motorways and dual carriageways (doing 70mph may save you a couple of minutes). On ordinary roads, it's usually 50 - 55mph, depending on the road conditions. These days, I'm in no hurry.

That should not be a EV trait. Always driven like that. Although it really does help in a EV.

Just a quick tip for everyone with an all electric car. Ved will be £165.00 next year on all electric vehicles so renew it now for twelve months before end of March even if it’s not due and you’ll get £0.00 ved till March 2026. Mine was due in August 2025. So I’m saving 6 months or £82.50. Just go to government car tax site and use the 11 digits code on your v5. It will say cars already taxed do you want to continue just click yes and continue. It won’t ask for any payment details as it will be £0.00. Job done and cash saved.

Not £165, it’ll be £195.
