Diesel or petrol? Is it reliable?

Hi everyone, I'm just coming from a really bad experience with a Citroën C4 1.5hdi, and I'm looking for a reliable car.
From what I have read, Kia Sportage is a good reliable car.
I'm planning to buy a used 2019-2020, budget around 11k.
Is there anything in particular I should look for in a used car? Better petrol or diesel? We do normally around 10k mi per year.
Thanks in advance for any help

I've had three Sportages so far and they have been reliable, but there are potential issues. 2019 to 2021, Kia introduced two diesel 48V mild hybrids. I had the 2 litre version which I ran for 4 years without any issues and I traded it in for my current car, however the 1.6 CRDi 48V mild hybrid has had a major issue. There were a large number of engine failures due to a tensioner fault, it is well documented on this forum (do a community search for tensioner. A fix was eventually introduced and seems to have sorted it out, but I would want assurances it was applied to any proposed purchase.
I don't have much experience of the petrol engines, but the 1.6 T-GDi seems to be a decent car. They don't give fantastic mpg and are prone to PPF (GPF) issues, which are again well documented on this forum.
One thing that is essential, make sure the service book is complete, without it the Kia warranty is worthless.
As I said they are a good car, but shop carefully.

Edit: I should point out I liked both my previous Sportages, so much so I bought my current car. I've not suffered from any major issues.

I had a 2017 1.6 petrol for 7 years (just exchanged for 2024 version) the mpg overall was 38 (the fuel consumption depends on how you drive it you may drive differently to me) i had a couple of problems that were sorted under warranty without any fuss. It was an excellent car so i purchased another.
i have only done about 900 miles in my new one and that is returning 42mpg but time will tell.
