EGR will give what we call blue smoke when startingfromcold first thing in the morning and usually runs lumpy for a couple of minutes not wanting to rev up.Also when you go to pull away from stationary it will have a lag when you put your foot down and then when at about 2000 revs when turbo cuts in will fly away. This is because if EGR valve is leaking there is not enough oxygen to combust fuel properlyuntilturbo boosts more air.If it is real black smoke points to leaking injector(s). Have you changed the air filter as you have not mentioned that.

It could be the EGR valve. My last car had a sticky valve, it would sometime stick wide open. This produced a huge amount of black smoke and very little power. It depends where it sticks, wide open = more exhaust gas and less oxygen in the combustion chamber which in turns leads to the power loss and smoke I used to experience.

Check your engine oil level as well. If the injectors are leaking into the bores, and then to the sump, it will gradually fill up and could lead to the dreaded "runaway", when the sump fuels the engine and it will not stop until the sump us empty or the engine blows. See Youtube for a number of videos.

Hi All. Many Thanks for all the advice, and for pointing me in the right direction. My 2006 Kia Sorento was having the same problem as Kev T's (In fact, when I read Kev's Question I thought it was me talking!). Have taken it in and it's the Intercooler Pipe which has split apparently.Should be fixed within the next day or two.
