I've always had Landrovers other the past 8 years & run them all year on all terrain tyres , they always worked well in all conditions . This will be the first winter I've had to think about getting another set if tyres , I've read lots of pros & cons about them in the snow when compared to the snow socks . But seeing that video makes me think I should invest in a set .

Blimey I've been quoted £500 for a set of 4 winter tyres to go on my 18" alloys & that's the same price I've been quoted for 4 steel wheels c/w winter tyres. .
Will keep looking

Yep..even the 17inch michelins that come as standard on the proceed are £560 around my parts and that's the very best price I can find with balancing fitting ect. Chances are all the weather men scaremongering people into it being a bad winter and allowed all the tire suppliers to cash in on some much needed winter profit.

Slow down, lessen steering angle, pump the brakes and use your gears for reducing speed...saves you £500. Gone are the days of proper driving lessons and car control so it seams. Edited by: RichieD76

A pair of 205/60 by 16s cost me £235 fitted. That includes the labour which included swapping wheels round as the front had new tyres (now on back). After the trouble from last year, I decided to go for winter tyres this year.

I live in Austria where winter tyres are manadatory from November to April. Therefore, I am used to driving in snow.
I just came to the UK to collect a new Kia Soul Hunter so I bought a set of winter tyres here and brought them with me. They were fitted the day after delivery of the new car. On the way home in France the motorways had not been salted or gritted and there were accidents all over the place. With my new top grade winter tyres I drove at 50mph in the outside lane overtaking everyone and my "Soul" performed like magic.
The French were just standing there scratching their heads watching us sail by.
I say "Get winter tyres" and "get good ones"

Yes. Cheaper in the UK.


The 2012 model is not available in Europe as fas as I can see. I went to three main Kia dealers none of whom had a Soul in stock and all tried to talk me into something else.

I bought one for £14,700 (2012 special edition Hunter model) as against buying the 2011 old model here in Austria for 22,000‚¬ No contest.


I can run it legally as it is taxed, owned and insured in our son's name in the UK. After 3 years when it needs an MOT I will either import it or chop it in again.

I must say you may have to be careful nowhere days with that one and check your insurance policy. A lot of them require the main / predominant driver to be the policy holder. They also assume the policy holder is the owner and registered keeper, We nearly came unstuck on that one a while back.

There is an Insurance broker in Swansea who specialise in car insurance for ex-pats.
As long as the car is registered to a UK resident owner that's fine. My wife and I are then on the policy as named drivers. I am quite sure that we are fully and adequately covered.
You are quite right to raise the point though.

I rang various tyre companies in the UK without a lot of luck. They mostly stocked a fairlylimited range and I found it hard to get the size I needed. One very nice man told me they could supply them at £250 per tyre + vat and fitting so I wasn't all that polite to him.


I actually bought them at my local garage in Slovenia for 170‚¬ each. They are 225/45R18's



They are good quality with a good snow tread pattern.



Snow tyres need to be made (A) from a rubber compound which remains flexible in freezing temperatures, And (B) the treadshould bewider where they touch the road so that as they rotate they throw out the snow and ice they have just bitten into so that the tyre comes round again with full grip and no snow and ice clogging the tyre tread.

Please don't think I was having a dig it was just a mention as my girlfriend and I nearly came a cropper with a claim a while back due to a misunderstanding over wording on the policy regarding the registered keeper. Even though the registered keeper was a named 2nd driver.
