When I recently bought my 07 Rio diesel I got a set of alloys and (cheap) new tyres as part of the deal. Ever since there's a real noticeable wheel judder at various speeds which you can drive through. This suggested to me the wheels weren't balanced so I had them done. The steering wheel shakes noticeably when it happens on motorways.

Its made no difference so I wondered if anyone else had this problem - mainly between 70 and 80 mph? is it possible the standard of tyre may be a factor?

Thanks.

Check if the balancing weights have been added not just at the front of the wheels but also at the back.

I recently had two new front tyres and had exactly the same problem.
I took mine back to the garage and then weights were added at the back of the wheels and these worked fine.
Since the steering is so light on these cars, any vibration is picked up.

are they genuine alloy wheels if not make sure they fit back against the hub correctly some aftermarket wheels come with a plastic insert to centralize the wheel we have seen this type of wheel have issues if its not fitted

take the car to a good tyre shop not a quick fit get them to check the balance if needs be get the tyres removed from the wheel and get them to check the wheel only on the balancer again we have seen aftermarket wheels that have huge imbalance before the tyre was fitted

you should only have a maximum of 50 grams of balance weight any more is unsafe usually if the tyre shop turns the tyre 180 degrees on the rim this will reduce the unbalance situation

The alloys are aftermarket ones but actually look quite smart. I will take it along to somewhere like ATS when I next get the chance but would the genuine Kia alloys solve the problem? Edited by: Paulq

that depends if the problems with the wheels i can only comment on what we have seen we fit tyres every day to kia wheels and can honestly say we have only ever had one that would not ballance with in 50 grams and when we looked at that one closely it was buckled on the inner edge probably pot hole damage at some time

I did take it to a local tyre shop who said that they were not that bad but did rebalance them all for me. It does not seem to have made any difference at all but will have another go.

Well, mystery solved...at a cost. I went to one of the High St places who could not have been more helpful and informative. Actually took me into the workshop and demonstrated what was wrong. Basically - cheap and nasty tyres! New set purchased - problem solved!!

Not too sure if it is true or not but some garages get tyres on palates and some times the bottom tyres are squashed because of this.

As a result some tyres are slightly out of balance and eventually settle down to their normal shape.

Like I say, I am not too sure if this is true.

Not sure if this was the case here but, in addition to them being cheap, they were heavy load tyres so that in itself made sure the ride was far more firm and jumpy than it should be.

I haven't put premium tyres on it but, driving home, it was like driving a different car altogether. Quieter, less harsh and no steering wheel judder whatsoever at speed. Am happy with it now and it drives as I wanted it to when I bought it.

glad you got it resolved sounds like you had a egg shaped tyre then
this should have been picked up when they were ballanced

enjoy the car now
