Hello Everyone,

I think my turbo is on its way out...i'm getting a whistle most of the time....I even get a slight whistle on start. Just wondered if anybody has any advise and experience with this fault?

HI Ian,
I have the 2.0 crdi and the turbo always seem to whistle more when cold idle @ 850 rpm, increase whistle @1000 rpm but when moving nothing. Had the car since new 2009 and just turned 100k.
What is your mileage and as long as you service each every year with good oil & filter change I wouldn't go looking for problems.

Mine went at 168k miles, it whistled for ages, even thought the police were behind me.
My advice is run it till it goes, there was a post on here somewhere of a garage that will repair them. A replacement turbo and new clutch about 8 or 9 years ago at a Kia dealer cost me 2k

Its done 115K. I've used Castrol Magnatic for many years, although I have gone over the service interval afew times. I'm concerned as there seems to be a lot of oil in the pipe to the intercooler, If the seal goes in the turbo, i'm told the oil will be sucked out of the engine and then its knackered

Yep, that is exactly how it sounds......Been quoted over £1000 at non kia garage, which is nearly as much as car is worth, so thought id have a go at getting it off, but stuck on ehaust bolts, they won't budge

My 2008 started whistling at about 110-120K
Took it to a Diesel Specialist (does the local Taxis) who said it pulled fine and only very slight play in the Turbo. Advised to leave it until it got worse.
Still whistling at 195K

I think I was quoted £500-£700 to have it replaced 4-5 Years ago.
Some places will replace the internals (cassette/cartridge) instead of the whole Turbo.

Well I can tell you exactly what will happen when the seals go on the turbo. Firstly it won't wreck the engine.
Mine went on the M1, first i noticed a dramatic power loss but it kept running so I thought I will coax it to the office and then sort it. It did a further 50 miles and as I went up the multi car park ramp stopped wound the window down to take a ticket I thought where's all the white smoke coming from......me. it filled the whole car park level with smoke most embarrassing. Called the AA they checked it and towed it to a main dealer you know the rest.
Good that RichardB is still around to direct you to the turbo garage.

We had our turbo replaced around the 95k mark... It too was whistling quite loud... Car still drove OK and pulled. So had it replaced at a non-kia garage. Paid around £600. This was nearly 2 years ago mind...

Turns out just a chipped tooth... Lol..

If the chips become broken vanes on the inlet side, they can be sucked in to the engine which can'nt be good. if there is a intercooler fitted this may save the engine collecting the broken parts although when the new turbo is fitted you need to be sure no bits are left in the intercooler.

When you say there is oil in the inlet pipe, check if this is after where an engine breather joins the main pipe, it may not be from the Turbo, if it is from the Turbo the biggest (second worry after the bits of vane and particles from the wearing of the casing) is seal failure and ending up with a "runaway", the last concern then will be the loss of the engine oil. I have had Turbos whistle for years with no issue and on the other end catastrophic failures with out a single "peep" prior to. It's worth pulling the pipes off and having a look where the oil is coming from and a visual look at the vanes and check the float/play in the unit. I would keep an eye out for any smoke from the exhaust too. IMO. PS Although it won't have an effect on your whistling, if the oil is from a breather look up catch can on another thread.

I had an oil leak and on checking it was coming from the large bottom pipe passenger side (intercooler pipe I think) on inspection the jubilee clip had rotted away. A new clip sorted the problem.

There shouldn't really be oil in that pipe, in "sorting the problem" it is likely you are ensuring the oil makes it's way into the engine, I would be looking for where the oil is entering the intake system, you have cured the symptom not the problem IMO, it's good to replace the clip as it is likely you were losing boost pressure, but I would rather the oil was forced out of the hose than ingested. Try the engine breather pipe to see if that's where the oil is coming from, it's why some folk fit "catch cans" into the engine breather to separate the oil out.

If the intercooler hoses & pipes are damaged or disconnected, oil leaks may occur from the hoses & pipes and the
turbocharger may exceed the permissible speed then it may cause damage of the turbocharger.
If the intercooler hoses & pipes are damaged, replace them with new ones.

Kia wanted £300+ for the Hose !!
Found an aftermarket one for about £20 in the end.
