There are 3 timing chains on the mk1 sorento and I believe 1 is doable but the other 2 are engine out?...the most important thing is to change the oil and filter regularly...is yours making a noticeable chain rattle then?
If you stick to the manufacturer recommendations then you won't go far wrong. You can change the oil and filter more frequently, it certainly won't hurt.
It is important on the mk1 to check regularly for 'blowby'..the copper injector seals washers can cause serious problems so take off the oil filler cap with the engine at idle, there should be air coming out but not oily vapour.
