No-one seems to have commented on what a useless piece of equipment the "change gear" indicator is. To be based solely on revs isa waste of time and technology. I can remember 30 years ago devices that monitored the manifold vacuum to achieve the same thing, but much more relevantly.

When you are pulling a caravan at 60 up a motorway gradient, or driving briskly on a country lane, you really DON'T want to be told to change up to 5th; when you are gently pulling away downhill you don't need to be constantly reminded you have changed up too soon.

I found the major flaw with it within 15mins of driving my proceed 4 home. If you change when it indicates, you never reach the set rpm in the hand book to instigate DPF regeneration. Well unless in my case you drive at 85mph in 6th that is. Using lots of fuel & risking my lovely clean licence. I can see many people who are little educated turning up to the dealer, engine management light on, blocked DPF, and a £1000+ bill. At which point there reply will be " but I changed up to the gear it told me, when it told me to, so why would I need to rev it higher?" to be frank I would be on there side! Seams in my case I have to drive at 42mph in third! To get anywhere near the recomended engine speed needed for regen stated in the handbook of 2650rpm. For 20mins at what the trip computer is telling me 45ish MPGEdited by: RichieD76

I must admit I agree with Sid on this. I had a Citroen CX back in the 80's that had a similar vacuum system with red, orange, and green led's to show fuel consumption and another to suggest when to change up. It worked quite well.

The Sportage will happily tell you to change up a gear while labouring up a steep hill. It must have some connection to the throttle pedal too as it goes quiet on a trailing throttle. I suppose they need a system that will work on all models, petrol and diesel, so a vacuum system is out.

I'm wondering about this DPF regeneration thing because I have another car that has a DPF and to the best of my knowledge in eighteen months of driving it has never regenerated. The handbook suggested that the regeneration will only take place if the filter gets clogged. Normal mixed driving keeps it clean.

I think it's pretty cool as it is only advising you the
optimum way of obtaining a better mpg. Ultimately,it is obviously down to
the individual and the driving conditions which dictate when to change gear.

I see the point of it as like you say it helps you maintain Eco driving. But if you stick to it, you'll never regen the DPF. Kia and other manufactures really need to make people more aware of the DPF.

It's a gizmo no more no less. Drive by ear & feel.
The company has 2 VW's & 2 Fords with the indicators, - on the Transit Connect if you follow the gear change indication the fillings are shaken out of your teeth!
Interesting discussion about the DPF though.

As I said above, I have a proceed 4 which is a lot higher geared. Even the AA have reported to its members that they should check the manufactures guide lines for DPF regen instructions as there having to tow people away from motorways because they can't do anything about it. The proof in there statement is that with cars being geared for more motorway driving nowadays to save fuel, that there cruise at a lower engine speed than there regen engine rpm. The fiat 500 needs 2500rpm for 30mins, qashqai apparently needs 3000rpm for 30-60mins so a member of there owners club forum says. In my handbook the 1.6 126bhp asks for 2650 for 25mins. But at 70mph in 6th on the motorway it's only around 2400 hense me saying why you would need to either race the engine in 5th for half a n hour wasting fuel, or drive at 85 to start the regen.
If you havent een educated to the problem with DPF's and the gear shifter is telling you to shift up to save fuel...your not going to ignore it! Hence why i think on deisel cars fitted with a DPF they can more of a hinderance that a help.
Like I say it's a been such a problem for the AA that they emailed or posted letters to owners recentlty of cars less than 3yrs old. More info--

So it's a good thrash down the autobahn for me
my MPG had dropped I am now starting to wonder if it is down to the DPF

I've had my 1.7 '3' isg satnav for 5 weeks, kept* more or less to the gear indicator changes, my wife uses the car 5 days a week on a 15 mile each way commute to work on mix country lanes/A-roads into town(and I know she doesn't necessarily keep* to it - she's a woman - what do you expect?!)- we've had between 49.7 and 54.3mpg in that period except when we went to Lanc's a 500 mile r/trip using cruise as much as possand still got 46.2on mix of major & minor A-roads/M-way & country roads. I always run my cars in for 1st 5K and won't exceed 2500rpm till then, the gear change indicator/advisor comes on in any gear at around 2000rpm. I don't know how accurate the mpg indicator is on the cars computer but it can't be a million miles out can it? If it is out by as much as 15% that's still around 44mpg over the period, but I'm hoping the cars tech isn't that far out!.

Its all a bit subjective but on our 2 cars with dpf's the engine note becomes a little harder, if you stop at a junction the idle can be uneven, you may notice a burning smell if you have the window open at a junction but the most telling one is the fuel consumption read out falls like a stone during the regen. Take a while but with practice you will spot one.

I've been told that the exhaust noise gets a bit ''throatier" too, although I've never noticed it myself.

The AA, dont make me laugh. The car will drive perfectly normal if the DPF is blocked and light is on, it will not need recovering to a dealer. The car will automatically regenerate once soot levels have reached a certain mass, the opertaing temperature is normal and the revs are over a certain amount. This will usually take place along a motor way at normal driving, no escessive revs needed. In the book is what is needed to do a Forced regeneration, this can also be carried out at any dealer using the diagnostic computer but some dealers may charge. If you use a diesel for mainly round town driving then you should have brought a petrol as you wont get the best mpg out of a diesel for that type of driving. The gear change indicator is solely for economy reaasons and I beleive on most models it can be turned off.

A diesel loves nothing more than to be worked hard on a regular basis, not only for DPF regeneration, but for clearing out the soot that can build up from town and/or low rev driving. Accelerate hard and maintain motorway speed in 5th instead of 6th - it will do it wonders.

A diesel loves nothing more than to be worked hard on a regular basis, not only for DPF regeneration, but for clearing out the soot that can build up from town and/or low rev driving. Accelerate hard and maintain motorway speed in 5th instead of 6th - it will do it wonders.

I think that advice applies to all infernal combustion engines, not just diesels.

A diesel tuning expert also told my brother that you should use a premium fuel occasionally, especially with a turbo where

the lubrication depends on the fuel.

I
don't own a sportage but a 54 Plate Rio 1.4, my gear selection
routine as follows;

Normal
driving i.e. urban driving I shift up at 2500-3000 RPM so from 1st in
to 3rd and sit in 4th for speeds up to 30MPH.

For
undertaking dickheads who see it "clever" to sit in lane 2
and 3 drive at speeds less than 70MPH on a motorway or dual
carriageway a good blast of up to 5000RPM in 3rd then straight in to
fifth normally does the trick.

General
motorway/dual-carriageway driving sit at 79MPH maintaining 3500 RPM.
Happy days

Undertaking and 79mph on a motorway and dual carriageway?

Are you sure you should be admitting these illegal activities on a forum?
