Speed sign recognition

Not sure if my car needs calibrated or if the folk who put the signs up are needing calibrated but quite often I'm picking up speed signs off slip roads. ie today on M74 Glasgow I was in middle lane and it picked up a sign of 30 from a slip road. Have seen it other places too. Do others get this or am I needing it adjusted?

Yep, happens in a few places I know of, mostly bends and junctions where the sign is visible, but not meant for direction I'm going in. There are also a couple of roundabouts I pass through, where the speed limit changes from one side to the other, in one case 50 down to 30, the signs are positioned beyond cycle track and pavement and car doesn't see them. Thankfully my eyeballs are still fully functional.

Had on on holiday. Straight road 50 limit. Side road going off with 30 limit. Somehow the 30 sign had got twisted and was showing at a 45 angle to main road. Camera picked it up... Had daughter standing on brakes when she saw the change in limit 🤦‍♂️

I fully agree with all the comments, it is not the camera that is at fault it is the poor positioning of road signs which causes the issues. Occasionally my Sportage will pick up a 'rogue' speed sign and display it on both the drivers console and SatNav screen. Not a lot you can do about it but I would still prefer to have the system being 99% accurate than have nothing and fall foul of a speed camera. As a tip now winter is coming with all the filthy weather just make sure the forward facing camera is kept clean otherwise it can't always see the road signs;

Sounds like my car is ok then. Surely the sign positioners will need to get smarter if autonomous cars become a thing.

Incidentally does it not do 5mph increments ? We have signs at work that are 15mph and it doesnt seen to recognise them for some reason.

I believe that the way these systems work is to compare what the camera sees with an internal database of road or speed signs so if the system doesn't have a 15mph image it won't report it.

On my last car whenever I passed a local 5t weight limit road sign the dash showed 50mph 🙄

This issue seems to be common across many marques and where the systems are just 'advisary' seeing an incorrect speed sign on the dash is an irritation, this get more serious where cruise or limit systems rely on speed sign recognition BUT it becomes critical when autonomous systems are employed.

I discussed this with Euro NCAP a while ago (Euro NACP specify how these systems should work) and it is their view that the issue lies with the people who put the speed signs up, good luck with that 🤣

There is a long way to go before 'autonomous cars' become a thing, imagine the mayhem when it tries to follow the sat nav route - yikes! Much more interesting is that European cars will soon have speed limiting software which will depend on the camera/sat nav.

I believe the UK is adopting the same legislation, I look forward to trying to explain to Mr Plod that I couldn't have been speeding because my car is fitted with speed limiting systems 🤔

My previous car did but my Xceed doesn't, I'm not sure which is best as I found that although the bonging did remind me to slow down it was so frequent it nearly faded into the background noise 😅

On balance I would like to have it and find it strange that it's not common over the Kia range

Not sure if it's the ones between Motherwell and Hamilton (Strathclyde park) you mean. Those are away now as far as I'm aware. I was on 74 today then m8 to braehead and despite cop26 I wasn't delayed. Clyde tunnel turnoff looked bad though.

I have just updated my Sorento satnav from the Kia site and thought all was OK. I posted as such. However, I've noticed an annoying feature. My previous Sorento got its speed limit info from reading signs AND the map, with the roadside sign taking priority. My current car now either gives signs OR the map, not combined. It depends on a setting 'Display speed limit' on the car menu. If it is set, then signs are read and displayed temporarily, the nav screen displaying nothing afterwards. If it is not set then the map speed is displayed on the nav screen permanently and road signs are ignored.

Progress?
