If all glow plugs ok ,i would first of all put some REDEX diesel injector cleaner in tank. If no improvement i would suspect EGR valve, especially if you can smell unburnt diesel when it smokes. If EGR is leaking by exhaust gases on cold start up, the oxygen amount in the air intake is insufficient to combust the increased fuel being injected which is being determined by the temperature sensor when cold.My EGR wasreplacedearlier this year, no fault codes come up as it works ok electrically, but it is the valve seats that leak.

Hi Birdman, thanks for the quick response, could i blank the egr valve off instead of replacing it to see if that stops the smoke or will that bring the eml on the dash on. Thanks Dave

Youcouldblank it to try, idon'tthink light will come up ,engine will run hotter so not ideal if towing. If it does bring light up it should reset if you disconnect battery. I woulddefinitelycheck glow plugs first , i put a new set in earlier this year and one packed up after 5 weeks. And i find the Redex good as if you have dirty injectorsdribblingthis will also give smoke. Also worth changing air filter if not done for a while. In the past i have found either glow plugs or Redex have stopped it but the last time my son took it in his garage and the new EGR valve sorted it.

Hi Birdman, Thanks again for the advise, it had new glow plugs in it a little while ago and was doing the smoking before and after replacement, it has also had a can of BG32 through it and still smoking so i think i will make a blanking plate up for the EGR and try for a few days, if it stops i can buy a new one but they are a bit expensive if it doesnt cure it. Many thanks Dave

If you find the EGR is the problem if you send me a Message i will let you have part no as i still have box which it was in from Kia. Beware of some on ebay as some are not the complete valve only the actuator and some are for American market models.

Hi Gazb I did stop it smoking by adding 300 mil of mineral two stroke oil to every full tank, also engine is a lot smoother and quieter with it . Hope that helps Dave

I will try this and see if it does help !! Were your symptoms same as mine ie really smelly/fume'y I thought the exhaust was blowing and it was coming in to the car, and the smoke is like blueish white ? The smoke went as it warms but the smell stayed

Hi Gazb it was a blueish white smoke and a lot off it but only lasted for a few seconds and then would clear, only did it first thing on a morning or after been stood at work all day. I thought it was a dripping injector at first but had them leak off tested and were all ok. I read on the internet about two stroke in diesel so gave it a try and after a little while the smoke disappeared. Dave

This should solve it...Millers Diesel Power EcoMax

And stay away from supermarket diesel, wouldn't go as far as some others and buy BP or Shell premium brands, but a tank of Esso and 50ml of Millers Diesel Power EcoMax and the smoke goes after two or three tanks. Tank and a half of Tesco diesel and the smoking came back!

I was a cinic myself and thought it was branded petroleum companies propaganda but this certainly worked in our case and usually Esso is the same price as the supermarkets, so now avoid even with the 5p off a litre gimmick.

I would imagine the root course was dirty injectors on an 80k car, however some have reported same issue on nearly new very low mileage vehicles.Edited by: hchwskse

Hi Gazb, I see you've not been active on here for a while but hopefully you will get this.
Did you ever get to the bottom of this problem? I have a 2005 2.5Crdi Sorento with identical problem, I've tried everything I can think of, blanked EGR, used a good engine cleaning additive, & given it a damn good thrashing, but still does the same, exactly as you describe, whitish bluey smoke & an awful stink. Hopefully you'll get this a tell me you found the problem & corrected it & tell me what it was, cos' I'm well fed up now..
Cheers.

Hi Muddy, no, still not sorted. Local Kia dealer did diagnostics & told me 2 injectors stuffed, then wanted ÂŁ986 to fix. I'm on holiday now & its getting worse, started cutting out now. Guy down here just plugged in & told me 1 injector stuffed, so at present I'm going to get 1 injector & try it. I'll keep you posted.

Ok......how longs yours been like it? Do I tempt going away on Wednesday with it, don't fancy a massive bill before I'm due to go on holiday.
Worst of all I'm towing a caravan too, I don't want to do more damage. Edited by: Muddy

Ours has had a slightly Smokey tick over since we bought it (nearly 3 years ago). It cut out 6 or 7 times, then we got the rank replaced under warranty & I thought that would be it. It now seems to run fine when driving, but cuts out sometimes when I stop on, tick over. I'm 300 miles from home on holiday so I don't really need it to get worse now!. Lucky enough, the guy we rented the farmhouse from used to have his own garage & has the diagnostics computer & has contacts in the trade, so has said he will order an injector I needed & hopefully he'll lend me the tools to change it. Coil have been a lucky holiday choice ˜Š.
