Hi all,

bit of a strange one. My Ceed which is not quite 3 years old yet made a strange sort of thud sound when I was reversing into a car park space. Later that day I used car and seemed ok.
However a day later, I’m getting some knocks and rattles when driving normal from rear of car. Almost sounds like it’s coming from boot area. i took everything out of boot and checked spare wheel and that seemed secure but sound is still present.

any ideas on what’s happened or where noise has started to come from?
Thanks

It’s always worrying when knocks and/or rattles occur but in your case, having satisfied yourself that the source is not in the boot area, it really requires examination from underneath. Although I’m not familiar with the exhaust mountings in your model, my first inclination would be to check the hangers/mountings for security.

Obviously, unless you have a pit in your garage, any underbody inspection is difficult so I’d suggest asking your nearest garage or tyre/exhaust specialist if they could check for you, given the information you posted.

How it occurred is unknown - I suppose you’d have noticed if you had gone over something which snagged the exhaust and equally, if a rear suspension component had struck an object, I’m sure you would have stopped to have a quick look for damage as far as is possible.

If your nearest KIA dealership is within easy reach, you could drive into their customer parking area and tell them it’s just happened/you’re worried/could they check it for you? It might be a safety issue.

Do please let us know any outcome in due course.

Thanks for the reply. As you say yes it’s always worrying when a noise like that occurs.

No, haven’t got anything caught or hit anything or been on any ground that could potentially snag anything from underneath just been on usual UK roads.

As I say, was driving fine and got to work car park. Reversed into empty space and that’s when I first heard a thud sound from rear of car so got out and checked and nothing there that could have caused it so unsure really what it was.

someone else actually mentioned exhaust mountings as well and said that you can get knocking and stuff when they become loose or break but still don’t understand how a car that’s less than 3 years old would have parts that are worn out already?

car is actually booked into garage in a couple of weeks for something else so will see if they can check underneath car whilst it’s in with them - although given then current climate, I wonder if garages will still be operating in a week or twos time.

Sounds like a hanger but could feasibly be a coil spring snapped / fractured with our wonderful pot holed roads. You don't have to be going over a pot hole for them to just "let go"

Ah ok, an exhaust hangar I assume?

can they just go then, even with car still fairly new? Hopefully car will still go in garage in a couple of weeks so they can check it over. If it is exhaust hangars ( I checked visibly from back of car and exhaust looks normal and hasn’t dropped or anything)then is it safe to drive, assume it’s on a number of hangars so wouldn’t just fall off as such?

I did wonder about springs but wouldn’t a spring make more noise when going over speed humps and stuff like that? If so, mine seems fairly normal sound when going over humps . Hear sound more when accelerating or braking or uneven road etc but seems to be rattling/knocking randomly

if it was with of what you said, is it likely they would be covered by warranty?

Get hold of the exhaust and give it a shake in all directions and repeat this at various points along it.

Proabably be covered by warranty unless there are signs of it being damaged by external factors,. If it is exhaust it is an MoT failure so will have to be sorted warranty or not.

Thank you for reply turnup. If it is the exhaust mounts though then is this a common issue as I’ve had cars before that have been 7 or 8 years old and never had a exhaust mount issue or if it is that is it just bad luck?

ok bit of an update as was checking it over earlier. When I was driving I listened more carefully and it sounded as though something was rolling about in boot, like a screw or something like that. Appears it’s not exhaust mount or in fact spring related but.... something is loose in where the boot latch area of the boot door is.

I lifted the boot and pressed on the open button a couple of times and could hear something knocking in there, I pressed again and whatever it was dropped as heard it rattle down in the boot. When I shut the boot and drove off it was silent, didn’t hear any rattling or knocking any more.

so what could it be?now a few weeks ago I had to have the boot antenna replaced under warranty as it was faulty and stopped working. That was all fixed and is working again. I wonder, could anything have come loose in there? Not sure how the antenna is fixed but all bolts for the boot latch are secured and fine. So possibly could be a screw come loose but would a screw really come loose in the boot like that. I also wondered whether when mechanic was fitting new part whether potentially A screw or something like it was dropped and lost in the boot area.
As I say at the moment it’s silent again but I imagine it will work it’s way into an area again at some point where it will start knocking and rattling about. Unsure how I can fix it to be honest as if mechanic did drop a screw then would assume that it was too difficult to retrieve which is why it’s now rolling about in there somewhere if it even is a screw but unsure what else could be loose in that are of the boot door?

Now, if only you had mentioned the work in that area in the first place!

Apologies, yes I should have but guess it never crossed my mind at time that it would be coming from there. Any ideas what it could be, a nut/screw has come loose maybe they lost one and didn’t think anything of it but at least it’s not something too major.

I think you have probably covered it and I think you’re going to have to speak to the garage which performed the work in that area if the noise returns. Given that there shouldn’t be any noises from that part of the car, the garage should take responsibility and investigate.

If the source of the noise is metallic, it is conceivable that a long flexible magnet could retrieve the offending part once the limited access to that area is achieved.

I’m just really surprised that the noise was coming from there. It is definitely something like a nut or screw and can’t imagine that a screw would just loosen all of a sudden. That’s what makes me wonder whether when the antenna was being done a screw was lost by accident and couldn’t retrieve it but didn’t think it would be an issue. Can’t think of what else it could be but at least it’s nothing too serious anyway.

when car goes in next I will let them know and I can now pin point where the noise is coming from so hopefully they can locate what it is.
Thanks for all your comments

Check the rear spoiler nuts as they have a habit of coming loose and falling off. Open the boot and you should see at the top either side about 3 closed ended black nuts . There are some more hidden behind the black plastic trim just above the rear screen too. We had a similar thing happen with my wife's car and it was one of nuts falling off, rolling down the inside of the trim and into the boot panel. Opened the boot and heard the nut fall out onto the floor.
Then the same thing happened to my Cee'd (yes, we are sad and have 'his and hers Cee'ds!) a few weeks later!

Hi Tsy83. I lifted boot up and can see 4 nuts along top, is that what you mean? They were the only ones I could see but nothing looked out of place and all were there and not loose so assume it must be something else. But thank you.

Yes, that's four of the nuts, the others are under this trim panel. If you're confident enough to take it off yourself it just unclips but be careful with the corners. If not, take it to your local dealer and ask them to investigate.
What you described sounds so similar to what happened to both mine and my wife's cars that I definitely wouldn't rule it out!

Ah ok thank you so much for that description and the picture you include as that was really helpful.

I think I would rather wait and let Kia take a look instead. They were going to have car next week but the dealership is closed now so will have to rebook once everything is back to normal again but I will mention that it sounds like a loose screw or nut somewhere and hopefully they’ll locate it ok.

I assume that if it was the screw that you suggest it could be that the spoiler won’t come off? Assume it’s help on by a few so would be safe if wasn’t checked for a while?
