Remote Smart Parking Assist frustration!

Has anyone completely mastered the Remote Smart Parking Assist function? For the first time yesterday I had a go at this on the driveway with very little success; I got the Sportage to start and even move back about a metre but that was all it would do, it refused to go forwards again and shut down. I also tried our EV6 but while that would also start, it would do nothing more that straighten its wheels before shutting down. I've cleaned the cameras and stood a couple of metres off to the front at a diagonal whilst making these attempts.

Yesterday we had to reverse our Sportage into a very narrow garage, narrow enough to require the mirrors retracting (fortunately it was my wife who then needed to squeeze out of the driver's seat). You'd think this would be exactly what RSPA was designed for, so when leaving we tried to coax the car to drive itself out of the garage; however while I could make it turn on, when telling it to move forward it'd merely switch on it's driving lights and make positive noises but then turn itself off without moving a millimetre. Tried several times with the same result.

Why am I having this problem???

It's odd that it switches off so quickly when you try to move it. The button sequence I use is...

1. Lock.
2. Press [HOLD] within 4 seconds of locking. Car starts.
3. Press and hold either the Forward or Reverse button only to move.
4. Press [HOLD]. Car stops.

Are you sure you are not pressing [HOLD] at the same time as direction buttons? This would tell the car to switch off. My PHEV will run for about 10 minutes unless I press [HOLD].

Mine seemed a bit temperamental, doing some of the things mentioned above. You definitely need to unlock, leave it a few seconds, then lock it before pressing the button to switch it on. However I found it much more responsive when I changed the batteries in the remote. Don't know if it was a coincidence or not!

Fair point. I'm standing a couple of metres off diagonally to the front. How far do you reckon is far enough?

Had another try a couple of days ago at a car park with cars parked closely on either side on a level surface. Car moved forward about a foot before switching off.

I'll try that next time then.

I'm trying not to be obsessed with this but I've just come in from trying again, only to experience basically the same failure; I stood well off to the side, engine started, wheels painstakingly lined up and then everything shut down!

Mine has always been a bit hit & miss, but I tried it in the supermarket yesterday when a learner driver (and instructor) parked a little too close for comfort. It worked first time, and quite surprised me, as well as the learner when he saw the car move by itself. 😅

I have been lucky with mine recently but I had similar frustrations to those above. I finally found a video on you tube that explained it perfectly.

1.Approach car and hit the “LOCK” button on the key TWICE.

2.Press the hold button in line of sight of the dash/windscreen for 4 seconds until led flashes You will also see the dash light up at the same time. Then let go of the ”HOLD” button and press and hold forward or backward. It takes a few seconds and in the PHEV the daytime running lights come on and then musical tones before it moves. This function is a real lifesaver for us wheelchair users. I have used it in anger multiple times since we got the car in December ‘24.

Persevere with it because there is a knack to it, finding the best position to sit/stand etc. but when you nail it? You will feel like Yoda! 🧘🏻 ….. I couldn’t find a Yoda emoji sadly. Sorry 😔
