How easy is it to access DPF data?

I would want some sort of advance information on when a regen is due.

P.S. Since a automatic pretty much chooses its own rpm (in normal operation), does it keep the revs in the required range when the car decides to do a regen?

If not, how the $%^&* are you expected to get a regen successfully completed, since the whole thing seems to be a 'stealth' activity?
