I don’t know what the heck is going on here... I just bought a 2015 Kia Soul from Carmax in Sacramento, California. I have never owned a Kia before. When I park it, with the lights on Automatic, and I take the key out and then get out and shut the door, the lights don’t go off! I thought they were supposed to be automatic! I’ve had LOTS of other cars and it’s always been the same with the automatic lights... You park, get out and shut the door behind you and they turn off 30 seconds later. What gives?!

I read in the manual that there is something called a Headlight Escort feature where they will stay on for 20 minutes straight after you turn the car off!!! Why?! Most cars would have a dead battery by then! Is that what the car is trying to do?! Do I need to turn that off? Why don’t they just go off when you shut the door?!

I’ve had so many cars with REAL automatic lights that I can’t always remember to shut them off manually with the switch and in my first week I’ve now had a dead battery SIX times!

They are giving me a new battery tomorrow and are insisting that I have been leaving them on turned onto the on general on setting but I just checked on that right now and there is no such setting! Automatic is the only kind of on you can select!

Is this car not really equipped with automatic lights? ...I mean in the sense of the way automatic is interpreted with other cars? I’m gonna have to keep a jump box in my car! This is not good...

I know that North American car controls can be significantly different to the EU/UK so can only make an observation about the lights on my UK Stonic but they may be similar to yours.

There are two light setting controls the steering wheel stick is the main setting for selecting the AUTO lights on/off in night/daylight conditions or forced side lights / headlights on . AUTO only operates the lights when the ignition is on.

If they are on ESCORT feature leaves the lights on for a time (about 4/5 mins in my case) after you leave and lock the car, it's intended to light your way to the front door. This function can be switched off in the controls settings menus (Lights/Headlight Delay). 20 minutes seems a very long time for the ESCORT function.

If the lights stay on after you leave and lock the car, and you are sure the headlight switch setting is in AUTO (as opposed to main/side lights), then I suspect there is a fault.
