Its a myth.

The Ssangyongs with 2.7 have a licensed MB engine with different bits attached.

But saying that......besides everything else breaking on mine, the core engine has kept chugging away at 134000 miles ( just presently a minor leak on the valve cover gasket ).

That's my worst nightmare!! I've had my 02 diesel for just over a year and have spent a lot of money gettingstuff sorted, including hundreds spent on aircon probs etc. My biggest worry - and is always at the back of my mind - is the fuel pump.

I've done a lot of research and as far as I can work out the most significant thing I can do to prevent it from self destructing is not to use supermarket diesel any more. I pay the extra and use the 'best' I can (if it is actually better).

Touch wood, the old bus is going fine at the moment but the truth is I don't really trust it. If it proves to be unreliable again this year I might sell it and go for a circa 04 Mondeo diesel.

But I think I read somewhere that Mondeos also have Delphi fuel pumps and may suffer similar problems. Hmm!!! I might just buy a bicycle and hope that Delphi don't make bikes.

Not sure there is much if any difference except price between supermarket and BP/Shell/etc diesel. They all come from the same tank farm normally in a tanker logo'e with BP/Shell etc . Seem to remember having or joining a discussion years ago on a Rover forum. One of the guys on there worked at one of the refinaries in some lab job said and could prove except for price there was no diference between fuel from local garages unless it specified as Shell Super etc.

The below is taken from Whatcar

"Q: Is it true that the fuel sold at supermarket petrol stations is
not of the same quality as that as you would buy from a dedicated petrol
station?
Alex Wells

A: According to the Petrol Retailers
Association, there is no difference between the standard petrol you buy
from supermarkets or franchised petrol stations. In most cases the
petrol and diesel is even produced at the same refinery and delivered in
the same trucks.

The exception to this is specialist fuels,
such as Shell's Optimax and BP's Ultimate. In their case, the fuel is
enhanced with additives, which produce that brand's particular
properties."

As for mondeos , my son in law has had 2 diesel ones and had much the same problems as the CRDI Sedona owners are/had having.
This Merc engine seems to have developed into some kind of super myth with all and sundry saying its a Merc engine isn't it , apart from it being a 2.9 cc I believe thats where the similaities end .

Ever paranoid as I am about fuel systems....1) seriously think about offloading the Sedona and ignore any rants from your wife about "we can't afford another car". I got that message from my wife and we are stuck with ours after £2000+ worth of costs. 2) Treat Mondeo's with the same regard as Sedona's.....they have a similar Delphi fuel system and sharded problems. For your next diesel....first quesion you ask is whether the fuel system is Bosch.
