Hi all, I need some advice on a quote that I've just got from Halfords on a manual gearbox and clutch replacement for my 2005 2.0 diesel Sportage - £2350! This is for a rebuilt gearbox, which alone cost £1500 in the quote, with the clutch and labour making up the rest.

I was expecting something around the £1000 mark but this seems really steep to me, especially looking at the advertised prices of gearboxes online.

I'm pretty short with money at the moment and would appreciate any advice on how I could get the work done cheaper.

Many thanks!

I had my Skoda Fabia gearbox rebuilt about 3 yrs ago as a bearing had gone. My local indy removed the box and sent it to a gearbox specialist for rebuild. They then replaced it complete with a new quality clutch and gave it a 12 month warranty all within 5 days. Total cost was £1,030. If I were you I would shop around as all Halfords will do is remove and replace the box, the actual work will be done by a specialist company.

Had my clutch and flywheel replaced a year ago for £848 after shopping around a lot. Replacing the gearbox is essentially the same job, but instead of putting the old gearbox in they would put the new one in. So, in other words, expect £848 plus the cost of the gearbox - almost exactly the price you have been quoted! The job is big as the subframe has to be removed to drop the gearbox which is about 6-8 hours labour for the full job. A good place to shop around for quotes is whocanfixmycar.com

Thanks for the advice, i've gone to my local indy garage and it seems like it's going to be a lot cheaper.

Would not be going anywhere near Halfords for a gearbox...
Find a decent local indi that has been recommended to you...

I would also be wary of any website that sends out requests to random garages. A good indi, will have enough work by recommendation & not require to pay a website to get them work.

Probably if they do even make an offer not much more than scrap. My brother in law had a car bought from new from our local dealer. When he was going to sell it to buy another motor, dealer had one same age and model on forcourt for sale at £5300.We buy any car offered him £1500 for his with lower mileage on the clock.
