Does anyone know if there is a specific criteria for this to operate. Sometimes even on decent gradients it doesn't work, and car rolls back, but on milder gradients it does work. Then it appears to work on the steep gradients.....it just seems a bit random.

Does your 2018 model year Sportage have an electronic handbrake. If so press to set auto hold and then whenever you stop especially on a hill press the brake pedal hard and auto hold will kick in. This will activate the handbrake and hold the car on the steepest of hills and then release when you press the accelerator to set off.

Yes it's got the electronic handbrake. Never really sussed out what the autohold was for😐

Always use autohold, but wish that like my old Qashqai I could press the button and it would then remember that I want it activated each time I get in. A real pain having to remember to press the button after each engine start.
