Hi, recently bought a kia rio, 2004 bout a month ago. Everything runs
fine with it except sometimes prob 60% of the time when im driving it
the temperature gauge sporadically goes up to max then back down to the
middle (where it normally sits). I'v checked coolant etc, and its all
fine and the engine isnt smoking or seem excessively hot or anything,
and the gauge doesnt sit at max, is it more likely a faulty gauge than
an engine issue?

Could be a faulty temp sender unit on engine or the wiring to the sender is bare in a point on the wiring and touching earth causing a max reading.

Agree entirely with Davy (faulty temp sender or earthed wire) happens with fuelgaugesalso
