Hi All,

since doing the June update (could just be a coincidence!) the built in microphone on the hands free system seems to have stopped working and now i have to shout to be heard when trying to hold a conversation - it has been perfectly fine since getting the car in December but now everyone is complaining they cant hear me although i can hear them perfectly well.

anyone else experiencing the same ?

It's intermittent, and very frustrating. Sunday I spoke to my dsughter from the car, no problem, yesterday, same daughter, same phone, same car, she couldn't hear me.

Not sure if it's related to another big problem I had with the head unit a month after getting the car. The dealer took two visits on three days to fix it, initially claiming it was my cables. Android Auto would reboot itself six times on a five mile journey. The dealer eventually fixed it, claiming a trapped wire that was "not a warranty fault" - whatever that means, I wasn't charged and would've disputed it strongly on a one-month-old brand new car.

The microphone fault could well lead to an accident at some point, with the driver frustrated with inability to make myself heard.

Yesterday tried unplugging Android Auto, the phone failed over to Bluetooth, but still couldn't make myself heard on a new call.

First thing to do is to remove your phone to car Bluetooth connection and then remake it. Second thing I would suggest is a soft reset. Not sure where the reset button is on the current Sportage, but on 4th generation it is a small pinhole near the rotary volume dial. Neither of these will do any harm and it just might fix the issue.

Step one - with no cable connection make sure that the phone and car are paired and that BT audio is selected for phone calls on the phone (I know not anything about the inside workings of iPhone audio connections)

Step two - Once you have Step one working properly then connect the cable and try CarPlay

Step three - when all else fails - ultimate solution - buy an Android phone 😂😂😂😂

Hi there. Just wondering if you have solved this problem? I have a 2022 kia niro and having the same issue. I can hear them, but people can't hear me so have to switch to phone speaker. Told kia when I took it in for it's service and they said they couldn't find any problem. Extremely annoying.

People say if I yell they can faintly hear me.
That sounds like the call is using the phone mic as opposed to the car mic. As iooi suggested a check of the phone settings is called for.

For Android try;

In Settings Search Box search for Lock Screen
Find Lock Screen Google Assistant
Switch on allow Assistant when screen is locked
And get personal results...

I have no idea if this fixes the reported problem but I found this on Reddit, checked my phone and these were on and my calls are OK on Android Auto (touches wooden table top 😂😂)

had mine in for a service last week and again they found no fault, but to their credit they have re booked it in (under warranty) in a couple of weeks time for a couple of days to give it more attention - fair play to them they even offered a courtesy car for the duration, but I'm fortunate in that i can pinch the wife's 23 plate Niro 4 HEV instead !!

will let you know if they find any solution ..

Anybody found a good solution for this issue? Have a Apple phone 12 generation and it does the same as described over - can hear all but they claim I get in and out of conversation and can`t hear me - I am sales rep so use the phone "all thew time" when driving but can not solve the issue so wonder to change car. Have a 2022 E-Niro.

I’m am SO glad I found this thread. I thought it was just me, and I’ve been going round the twist.

As per the OP, everything was going great with my brand new (in May 2023) EV 4. Then, I did the June update. Ever since then, I have not been able to make one single call without the other party always struggling to hear me. I can always hear them just fine, however.

At the time I had an iPhone 13 Pro. I upgraded to an iPhone 14 Pro. And I also have, as a work phone, an Android Samsung phone. Irrespective of the devices used, the problem persists.

Done the deletion/unpairing/repairing thing, to no avail.

I use the phone constantly in the car as I’m out on the road a lot (I’ve done 11k miles since May in my EV 4, all perfect miles except for the call quality).

A really frustrating experience to not be able to make calls safely, as this issue is extremely distracting.

I’m going to get the car booked in under health and safety and will be insisting Kia replaces the microphone and associated cables, at the very least

Hi & Welcome.

All I can say to that is good luck... I can here the dealers staff laughing at that from here.

Be careful, you may end up with a big bill insisting they replace stuff.

It is Bluetooth and the settings are correct - talked to the dealership and are going on service 9th Now and there should also be a new update that are supposed to solve this... Also tried delete phone in car - soft reset - pair phone again after dealers suggestion and it seems to be at least better. Talked about an hour Friday so seems to be good but let us see tomorrow... Will keep you posted!

Having previously spent 14 years in the motor trade as a Dealer Principal, I reckon I’ll get what I need…!
So, if you’ve had the problem since June, and with more than one phone, and with your extensive experience, surely you would have gone to the dealer with the problem sooner.

mine is a company car, and we have processes to go through. Also, because of my knowledge and experience I know enough not to simply turn up with a problem without having first gone through the processes of elimination and a little investigative effort on my part…a mistake nearly 100% of car owners make.

It’s the difference between the dealership mechanic playing guesswork, or being better informed.

Well I’m sure those of us ‘with no life, not yet grown up and non jogging snowflakes’ will take great notice of your ‘non tolerance’…….. for future reference of course! 😏

car spent 2 days with the dealer last week and they completely re loaded the software and checked all wiring loom connections etc and they didn't find anything amiss.

they then got me back in with my mobile (iPhone 12) and deleted the Bluetooth connection and remade it and also set the connection device type on the phone settings to 'car stereo'
finally they set the radio sound compensation to high - both of these they thought 'may' have been interfering with the microphone and Bluetooth connection.

short journey back home and test calls 'seem' to have improved things and im out all day today driving so will be able to give it a thorough test today and advise accordingly !!

We had a similar issue with our BMW X5 a few years back, resolved it on our Android phone by getting into developer options and disabling a setting called " Absolute Bluetooth Volume" instantly solved the problem, now when we get a new phone that's one of the first things I set up. Am sure Apple have a similar setting (but may have a different name)

From the Web: Unfortunately, some Bluetooth-enabled devices aren’t designed to handle Absolute Bluetooth Volume. As such, some may encounter audio issues when Absolute Bluetooth Volume is enabled. If you find that your Bluetooth device is having volume problems when connected to your Android phone, disabling Absolute Bluetooth Volume might do the trick.

As I understand it Absolute Bluetooth Volume on Android phones enables the volume of both phone and connected Bluetooth devices to be controlled with one volume control.
On an iPhone it’s controlled automatically, the volume control will alter the phones speaker volume, but will automatically switch to control the Bluetooth device volume as soon as it’s connected, so disconnecting the Bluetooth connection should give volume control back to the phone.

When you are in a call (assuming not driving) see if the mic on your phone is still live - if so you need to adjust the phone - I think there is a phone BT setting about using mic or BT connection.

You can enjoy hands-free calls with a BLUETOOTH mobile phone that supports the BLUETOOTH profile HFP (Hands-free Profile) or HSP (Headset Profile) via BLUETOOTH connection. If your BLUETOOTH mobile phone supports both HFP and HSP, set it to HFP. Operations may vary depending on the BLUETOOTH mobile phone.
