On the Sportage '19 plate is it common for the handbrake to need pulling high before the car holds?

My s60 had a button controlled hold, the last car with a handbrake only needed lifting 2-3 clicks but the Kia is about 5-6 clicks if not max.

If this is unusual is it an easy fix by Kia or is it more costly?

The handbrake (if its rear disc and drum handbrake) should be adjusted firstly at the drum end by expanding the brake shoes. To take the slack out of the handbrake cable through stretching can be achieved via the central armrest storage box. Empty out all the rubbish :) and there is a plastic piece on the bottom at the front that prises out with the aid of a small flat screwdriver. Revealing the cable adjustment nut where you can take out that bit of slack.
