I have just bought a Kia Soul Hunter with ESP. Do I need to have this function on at all times and if notwhen do I switch it off

just leave it on. If you drive sensibly (like you should on a public road) it will just sit in the background ready for preventing slides, to much wheel spin and control the car better in emergency situations. But as per every driver aid...its best driving to the conditions. Turning the ESP (which is a mixture of ABS, Traction Control & ESP) off, only effects the traction control which could be usefull when stuck in the mud say or on very steep inclines where momentum is more important than total grip.
