Hi all,

I used to be a kia technician at a main dealer last year, was senior tech and had enough of sorting peoples problems out so left for new career in sales. Problem is for my sins i bought my wife a sportage 06 petrol, got it cheap so balance pays for the fuel!! i want a second opinion on a rattle from the top end. At 2-3000 rpm under load half throttle there is a rattle from the engine bay, been bugging me a while as i couldnt do it stationary. Had another look tonight and it does it when on drive at around 2500 rpm but cannot get continual noise. having blown the dust off chassis ear i drove up the road trying to pin point. It sounds suspect camshaft? but cant understand why it only does it at one speed. Any ideas guys, have to add, I dont miss it....

thinking on those lines, does the chain on the camshaft have a tensioner or a guide? my thoughts are this could be worn causing the rattle. Thanks for your reply, Ill check out the shop manual.

These are a bugger of a job to find? and could possibly be a bracket or cable rattling at said RPM.
Could you check it out on a rolling road?

All the best

Hi... Hows the rattle..???? same here, had a loud engine/gearbox rattle for 12 months, finally identified astransmissionproblems.!!! and from 2 estimates given by 2independentgarages.. the repair will be approx £1500.00 - £2000.00. seems as if this is more wide spread then our our cars, the problems you'll always have is KIA like all other car companies is not going to admitetheyhave a faulty design issue and recall all cars for gear box replacements. The know we'ree british and will grin an bear it and foot the cost oftheirdesign short falls.

Hi... I wish it was that cheap, I've already had the clutch and the gearbox dropped... and its deffinalty an expensive transmission re-pair, it has to be done by specialist's that even dealers cant fix.. has to be sent to engineering company who break apart teh whole case..££££££££££££££££.
Kia rang yesterday, custoner services.. usuall stuff, take it in at your cost, we wont admit anything regardless of how many people complain about it on a FORUM. They give no timeto 'Forum complainers' apparantly... all 'time wasting complainers' who never go further than typing thier complaints... harsh I thought......

I have had a rattle from engine compartment on 05 model (newer shape, but not 6 speed box as on 06 plate) since purchase second hand in 2008, rattle is at low revs, low speed. After experiencing not completely smooth clutch change I took it back to Kia 2 times asking if all was ok with Clutch and Gearbox, strange rattle and didn't feel right. (Kia = "no its fine").

Had car serviced by different garage May last year, they said clutch is worn, feels wrong (car now out of warrenty) so I save up and have clutch replaced, within 4 weeks (500 miles) whole gearbox locks up!
Car was low loaded back to garage in Dec 10 (where clutch was done) - nothing to do with them, not their problem.
Now 6 weeks later with no car, gearbox is being dismantled. - rattle was rear bearing on drive shaft in gearbox, gears since car locked up need replacing and new rear bearing.
Car has done total of 48,000 miles.
Personally I'm very disappointed with the whole thing but still have 2 years to pay on the loan so bite the bullet.
Would strongly recommend avoid ALL Kia products to all people.

Hi Beks,

sorry too hear you had an expensive failure,

Ive a 2005 sportage crdi, 5 speed manual and my gearbox has the same rattle.

Just wondered if you could provide anymore details of the defects the garage found, and costs involved?

thanks

Hi,

Not sure this is good news but you'll finds its the faults transmission and not the engine.

I has an email sent via another member from Kia, which I must say seems suspicious, almost a red herring from Kia to keep Sportage owner quiet.!!!! whichread "the noise is not fault but a design anomaly and part of the cars character, soin essence 'shut up' it seems..!

You must complain to 'watch dog' to get this sorted...

My gearbox was taken apart by a friend who runs a garage and claimed the part which needs replacing is deep in the box which requires special tools and a re-build at a cost, not with profit but just cost of £1500.00 - £2000.00.

Good luck with complaining to Kia..

Hi, Hopefully someone will find some of this information useful.
The rattle was the rear bearing in the gear box, the rattle only occurred at low revs in low gears, couldn't replicate when stationary. (most frequently when you changed up early)
I had the clutch replaced first, which was worn but did not fix the rattle!
Unfortunately my whole gearbox locked up within 500 miles of having the clutch replaced, (although I cannot prove it, might have been the fault of the garage that replaced the clutch) the last hole in the drive shaft had become blocked not allowing lubricating fluid through, and therefore the gears sized. (large bang, and car jerks violently to a stop)
Unfortunately I had to have 5th gear replaced as it had sized on to the drive shaft and in a excellent job the garage managed to remove 5th gear without damaging the drive shaft but 5th gear was damaged and replaced, also replaced the rear bearing and the needle bearing and new seals. It took 2 weeks to complete the gearbox, it is now fixed.
Total costs were clutch replacement £500 and the gearbox rebuild £750. Jobs completed at different garages.
This car has done less than 50k miles!

Yes, I agree.

I had the same issues with a 2005 SX Diesel 50.000 on clock.

It was bought from main dealer, and given back within weeks of purchase. Gearbox rattle at around 2000, rpm.

They tried to tell me it was nothing to worry about, Bull**it.

Anyhow I did get my problem sorted out, at the main dealers cost.

There are other stories like this around, just google it.

Hi Paul... No sorry I did'nt/cant remember the part name or code..

I was also we're told my my local dealer that 'Kia Uk'asked them to wait until another Sportage came in, dismatle the gearbox, to identify which part was missing, as it wasnot on there scematic's in theengineering shop, photograph it and send it to Korea for a part number??????????!!!!!!!!!!!! if that does'nt scare you what will.

The dissapointing thing it Kia themselves said they take no noice of customer opinions on this forum, which is odd as its thier own?!?!?!?!?!??!?!

I am sorryI cant tell you thefixeither, the main dealer took this car back and
we did a deal on a different car.

But not before putting in a new flywheel, this didn't help.

My car spent more time in the workshop, than it did with me.

They had no idea what the problem was.

Firstly I was told this rattle would be put right in the workshop, beforeI picked it up on purchase.

ThenI was told it was just a diesel knock and nothing to worry about.

ThenI was told it was a worn injector causing this knocking noise, but they couldnt tell me which one.

Then I was told it was the Flywheel, which they replaced, at their cost.

Then I was told, yes there is a noise but we really don't think its anything to worry about, its not a fault.

Enough is enough, I don't own this car any more.

And I don't thinkI shall be buying Kia next time round, definitely not impressed.
