I have an 05 crdi carens and the gearbox no longer selects 4th and grinds into 3rd
my mechanic tells me its the synchro hub

all this at a mere 53000 mls

this will cost about £1000 with labour and parts to sort

by rebuilding the gearbox

and fitting a new clutch as that is now slipping... sigh

Enquiries for a second hand box :-

rare as hens teeth

everyone wants £550 plus vat

they all have about the same milage as the original (50-55,000miles) so its a risk

Kia Customer services told me to take to dealer for estimate then they would see if they could help

when the mechanic phoned the receptionist said

i can tell you the problem its the synchro hub,

and we have just charged another customer to diagnose it and then kia refused any help

and that was on an 06 reg

She said kias policy was only to help up to 12 months after purchase

so much for wonderful Kia

Don`t get me wrong i love the car and have been singing its praises for the 2 yrs i have had it

but am sick as a chip at the cost of repairs and the poor part exchange price offered even tho i hadn`t mentioned it had a duff box and clutch

has anyone else had this problem?

does anyone know if a different box could be fitted off another model

Hi popofski
I have a 53 with 54500 on the clock, Mine has just started to be disagreeable when selecting 3rd still going in just started feeling notchy not there a couple of months ago so my son tells me, When it dies i will rip it out and take it to a small gear box specialist in walsall, good place reasonable to 350 for a discovery box, My advice shop around small indipendants are the best one to one with the chap that does the spannering, The parts for our boxes are out there pattern parts i know i have enquired, Was warned when i brought the carens but it was cheap and ultra low miler and one elderly owner
Let us know how you get on chap
cheers col

hi all im a newbie to the site but not to motoring and should have known better but i have just got an 05 carens it was cheep!!!but i have the dreaded death rattle in the box [i bet the dealer jumped up and down when i drove away] its got all gears at the mo but its vibrating a bit, as so many owners seem to have this problem would it be rocking the boat to get a online pettition to see if KIA will recognise this and help with ploblem [ie] replacement of worn parts or complete box as this is not of DURABLE quality AND VEHICLES MUST BE DURABLE and last for more than 5 yrs its not just the odd vehicle its almost all from what i have been informed anyway can anybody let me know where in devon area i can get it rebuilt or does anyone know the price of a new box, the car is not 5yrs old til may

Ours has had the gearbox problem for some time: it started at around 50k, when the car was out of warranty: I did perster Kia quite a bit about it to see if they'd do it but it was a no go.

The good thing is, it hasn't got any worse in the last 15000 miles, it is a bit graunchy and baulky going 3rd to 4th butslow the shift down a bit and you can change without any hassle.When/if it does finally fail and become undriveable then I'll pull the box out myself and take it to the local tranny rebuild place whereI don't expect it'll be too outrageously expensive to sort...I wouldn't take it anywhere near a main dealer though, because they're going to chaarge 3 times what an indie would, and it'd no doubt be the same people doing the work.....

The downside for Kia of course is that I'll never buy another Kia, and I would always advise anyone who asks me not to buy one- had they considered a bit of goodwill I may have thought differently andbought another but as it stands I won't.....their loss not mine.

IfI had the time to spare I'd leave it regularly parked outside the localKia dealers with a big sign attached saying something along the lines of 'don't buy a Kia- ask me why' or similar, which would probably provoke some sort of hopefully helpfulresponse from Kia,but sadly the car is in use every day.

It's a shame because for a cheap car it's generally pretty good- easy and cheap to service, nothing too difficult and a lot less hassle than a picasso would've been, but I will never buy another Kia.

Good choice Cavking. They are used alot by taxi drivers, surely that says something. Great VWTDI engine which can be chipped up with great results. Early ones suffered from flywheel problems and you felt it through the clutch pedal. Not sure if its got a dual mass flywheel.
I know Ford Mondeo tdci were bad for it but you can get a solid flywheel conversion and that cured it.

Hi chaps
Quick update
The box is back in final bill for parts and labour + oil and gaskets
324.66.ok took about 6 hours to put back in over 2 days, Work got in the way, took it down the A5 for a blast, gears all there and changes down ok now, Still sounds like a tractor under load, It has done that since day one.
Even got a buyer a chap at work wants it to lug his drum kit around in,,
result

Pick the new one up wednesday week.
Found farewell to all

Had a similar problem with my 56 plate Sorento, got stuck in 1st gear, was told it was the clutch plate worn, at 53k miles ??, but was told it could be the bronze bush in the gearbox, which had welded together, the Warranty Co engineer said it was the clutch plate failing first, although the Service manager said it might have been the other way round, there had been no juddering or burning smell prior to the breakdown, I have only used it for towing less than 3k miles since I bought it. Wwish I had googled Kia before I bought it. Now in a battle with the Warranty Co. Nev
