DCT clutch failure and repair, a success story

At the end of January I put the car in reverse and the R indicator flashed but the car wouldn't move, so I restarted the car and everything worked as normal. The next day when driving I had no reverse, 2nd, 4th or 6th gears and the engine management light came on. I could just about drive the car but it was difficult.

I rang the local dealer and although they had service slots available they couldn't have the car for diagnostics until the 28th of February, complete waste of time.

Rang the next dealer that is a couple of miles further away and they could have the car on the 8th, but I was warned that a diagnostic fee of £160 would be charged if it wasn't a warranty claim. Took the car in on the 8th along with the service book to proove everything had been serviced on time, and within half an hour they rang me and said the clutch pack needed replacing and it would be fixed under warranty, the bad news was they couldn't start the work until the 26th February and it would take a few days for the repair. I left the car with them as it wasn't really driveable.

First thing this morning I had a phone call to say they managed to start the car earlier and it was ready for collection. The repair was a new clutch pack and actuator, and the car seems fine.

So the second dealer managed to fix the car a week earlier than the first dealer could get me in just to check it.

The car is a late 2018 with 25,000 miles.

Update
I got the car back after ups and downs,DCT clutch replaced under warranty, judder in the morning and in 2nd and 4th.I got it briefly on Tuesday evening but it end up being recover by the dealer as an issue came up

(bad earth point from corrosion on the earth strip , the earth from wiring loom wasn’t contacting correctly to the gearbox).

But all in all the dealer deal with it in the matter or urgency and priority, courtesy car being dropped off at my home the following evening as I'm 2 miles away from dealer. Now the car drives like new.

my sportage is with a dealer at present, seem to have the same issue. no R,2,4,6. not even fully sure what is being replaced but being told everyday that they are waiting on a part to arrive. 3 weeks without a vehicle at present and not looking like i will get it back this side of christmas. no idea where the part is coming from, they are not able to contact them to find out if the part is on its way either.

I have exactly the same issue. It started with unable to get reverse gear, almost immediately after a reset of EML by RAC I couldn't get R, 2nd, 4th or 6th. Been with dealer 17 days, after chasing multiple times, chased again yesterday to be told they've had authority from Kia to replace DCT clutch pack & flywheel ??. Wasn't aware that automatic had a flywheel aa such. Anyway here's hoping I get the car back soon. It's already been with them 6 months earlier where they had to replace turbo & DPF (or whatever the equivalent is on the Kia Sportage 1.6 crdi MHEV GT Line S). Car was with them for 4 weeks. No great service !! Either that or Kia"s breakdown quite often given backlog.

When you research the DCT or DSG gearbox you will find that it is a very complicated piece of engineering and from that perspective far more likely to have a fault develop. on the other hand, from a driving perspective it is 'night and day' compared with a conventional torque converter automatic. I believe that the servicing is far more important and changing the oil and filter in the gearbox needs to be done more often. just my opinion.

They also need to readjust the actuator by the new cluch pack,if they don't,the actuator will fail. Happened to me 2 weeks along after new cluch was fitted,All good after that but now after 30,000 miles the morning judder start to come back. Also a god youtube video what you can do to reset a bit the values and the biting point of the clutches is here,it works.DCT only.

Thanks so much for posting your faults this helps us all get these horrid gearbox issues sorted. Mine has done 30k miles and a 2019 model Sportage with the dct. What dealers did you all use? I am going to one in Watford Citygate. Hoping they will assist. I am having to pay for a loan vehicle but if the car is in the garage for that long will they cover the loan car cost as part of warranty?

That is insane do you have legal protection on your home or car insurance might be worth seeing if you can put in a claim at small claims court as it’s so close to end of warranty. This is also a known fault of these transmissions so you may stand a decent chance of getting money back problem is you need a car to work/live. Madness I’m sorry. Mine is out of warranty in 8 months and they are booking it in for actuator but going to push for clutch pack replacement as I know that’s going to go next. If they won’t I’m going to get rid of the Kia once the repair is sorted. I can’t afford a clutch on it at 30k miles
