Clutch problems!

Hi everyone. I'm not really expecting any answer to my problem, and others have already reported similar problems to the forum. However, my experience may be of interest and it adds to the tally!

My Sportage KX3 is 4 years old and has done around 36k. I bought the car Nov 13 from a Kia dealer. I do not tow anything and I'm a fairly sensible driver (although how the previous owner drove the car is unknown). Although I think it could be a little more powerful in the lower gears and the SATNAV/Bluetooth is odd and does not always work, I was generally happy with the car. However, without any warning the clutch slipped in all forward gears and an acrid burning smell followed. Luckily I was not on a motorway! I could not engage the gears until it had all cooled down (about 2 hours later), in time for it to be towed! Got the car to the Kia dealer, who investigated and confirmed that the Dual Mass Fly Wheel had borderline tolerance and should be replaced, together with the Cover/Disc and Bearings etc. They confirmed that it was wear and tear and not covered by Kia's warranty. Whilst the Kia garage have been most helpful, I find it worrying that this could go so quickly without any prior indication of a problem and somewhat sickened by the total cost of this work, which inc VAT, comes to just over ÂŁ2k. I've never had a clutch fail on me before, and I've been driving 30 years.

Hope this is of interest to members of the forum.

I could appreciate the clutch not being covered under warranty, but the DMF isn't covered either ??This is indeed worrying.

I'm personally losing faith with the 7 year warranty, finding out as each week goes by, something that's not covered.

as a dealer you obliged to dodge warranty claims unless it is unavoidable, the people who moan a little but roll over are the ones who get shafted, the ones who kick up a fuss and make a lot of noise usually get better treatment, dual mass are a problem for most manufacturers, but as it is a serviceable item such as a clutch they can hide behind this and blame driver abuse where as it is well known it is not the driver abuse in most cases but the design of the product. also kia pay a very low labour rate for warranty claims along with the kia standard repair times which are tight fisted, a dealer doing a warranty claim is going to loose a lot of money, and if the customer did not buy the car from them then they are going to avoid a warranty claim unless it is absolutely necessary, they are supposed to treat all customers the same but that does not happen due to the kia warranty labour rate being a joke,

An unfortunate pitfall of owning a modern diesel. Pretty much all modern diesel engines have a DMF which most owners do not realise is a consumable item such as brake pads, discs, filters. When the clutch goes it's recommended to replace the DMF and vice versa. All manufacturers are the same and average cost to get both done is ÂŁ2000. This with DPF replacements at ÂŁ1000 and injector / fuel filter issues diesels tend to get completely put me off getting another diesel. The savings you make on fuel are wiped out when hit with one of these bills which unfortunately are not uncommon. Petrol all the way for me these days with a lot less to go wrong and mpg not that far of the oil burners.
