Hi Guys
I've A sedona 2006 56 plate (new shape) 2.9 Diesel Auto

When i get below 1/4 tank of diesel, it starts to run rough, stalls but will re-start be it only for a while. When this did it a while back, the engine light comes. However, it hasn't this time. If i keep the fuel topped up it's fine. It's playing up as if it's run or running out of diesel.

I took it to KIA Cambridge who plugged it in...HEY guess what? no fault found or stored. All they told me was the "Injector pump was leaking!!!!" and i needed a set of glow plugs. Having my wallet lightened by £115 i wasn't happy with the result. Got a second opinion who also said no fault found/stored but didn't need new glow plugs and didn't have a leaking pump.

Today it's started doing it again.

I changed the fuel filter which made a differance in performance. However, 700 miles later it's playing up again.

Any ideas? i'm stuck to know what to look at next.

It seems to me, KIA have no idea how to fix this problem. I've spoken to as many dealers as i could find, they all have heard of the problem, the ones that are happy to talk to you rather than, "We need to plug it in to find the fault" Are telling me basically they don't know how to fix it.
I'm an ex-diesel fitter, it got me puzzled as well.

I have seen it suggested on this forum , I think it was Murphwiz that it is likely to be a faulty fuel sender unit. I have a 56 plate (old shape) that I don't let go below a 1/4 if I can . I first noticed an issue 1/4 full and cutting out at the crest of a steep hill, had use hand pump to get going , also had it drop revs as I exited sharply from a roundabout . On a recent 200 mile trip with a full tank it only dropped to 3/4 mark. But I think it is intermittent as I have run it very low but have never a had a lowfuel warning light. My gauge indicates fuel level all the time even without ignition on . this may be a feature of the sedona ? But if operating all the time may 'age' the contacts ? I guess if it is a faulty sender unit diagnostics wouldn't spot it as it will be giving a reading that is within spec even though it might not be accurate.

HURRAH !! I've fixed it. Taken just over an hour to fix as well.
Someone on here posted the fix when i put up a post last year. Click on link and read KiaNoGoGo reply.

I've followed instruction, it really is a simple fix. ALSO, i've taken step by step pictures, when my wife has finished using the computer i'll put them on here. Anyone able to do simple repairs can do this. NO SPECIAL TOOLS REQUIRED or computers. And i think i'll be asking for my money back from KIA Cambridge.

Basically, there is a Gauze filter on the pick up pipe thats covered in debris from the tank that basically comes from the fuel holding tanks in petrol stations. Also found a spider in the tank !!

One thing i instantly noticed it being fixed before starting the engine was the primer next to the fuel filter (Engine compartment)didn't sound as though it was struggling to pick up fuel. Before (even with a filter change) it sounded like a slurp slurp noise. NOW when i primed it, it filled up to a point i could'nt squeaze anymore.

As i said. Pictures to follow.

I've had exactly the same problem. I've been running the car down to low fuel light onbefore filling up ever since I got the car. Then after 3 months like this, it stopped completely, stalled, warning lights on etc., in early December. Diagnosed as out of fuel, recovery service got me to a garage, filled up, and it took 15 litres les to brim than normal. So, not out of fuel, just low. Billed for £75 from recovery, as "no fuel" not covered by policy. Argued, got it dropped. Since then, never let it run below a 1/4. Joined the forum, saw the excellent "how to" on the in tank filter, took it out, perfectly clear, but cleaned it anyway. Got over confident that this had fixed the problem, and last week, ran it below 1/4. Same problem. At least this time I knew how to restart her by priming, and then filled up immediately. So, absolutely will not let the tank get below a quarter from now on.
Car has done 56K, last full service at 50k including diesel filter, and decided to have oil, oil filter, and diesel filter changed at 55k.

Pleasing that different ideas are being aired, as I'm puzzled about the cause in my car.

I've had exactly the same problem, after numerous visits to my local KIA garage, with no joy, I took it to a deisel specialist. It turned out that my injectors were shot to pieces, so, they replaced them, and touch wood, absolutely no problems since!!! No engine light rearing its ugly head, no cutting out, its running sweet as now. I tried the tank filter route, no change. So see if you can get it to a deisel specialist and get them to do a pressure test on it. It worked for me!!!

Best of luck
