Hi to all my sx 54 plate has just been into kia main dealer for a diagnostic tests as the complete 4x4 system is not working at all they said they are 80% sure the transfer case is broken and fit me a new one for £3,000 I have power across all fuses. But when I removed and tested the voltage at the switch I have 5 volts entering the switch and no out put on any of the other contacts. When I select 4x4 low the voltage reads nothing on any pins. Could anylon one please shed any light on my problem. Kia also told me that there isn't a 4x4 ecu listed for my vehicle?

You have the torque on demand TOD.click on link for info on both systemshttp://sorento.kia-club.ru/Repair_manual/download/DOWN/BL%204WD.pdf

You will see the ECU for system shown under carpet.

the transfer box ecu for r/h drive is on the l/h side of the tunnel right at the top under the heater behind the carpet, you have to pull the carpet back to find it. you can give the mag clutch wire a live feed and that should engage the 4x4 if the clutch is ok. there is a multi plug under the car that might be worth a look if it is not drawing any power, on the back of the transfer box,

Many thanks for all the information given sorry for the late reply but I have only just home from work. I know far more now than I did 24 hours ago lol. So I take it that I should have more than 5 volts feed to the 4x4 selector switch then.and again thank u for ur time if anything else springs to mind please please let me know.

yes there is a mod and what it does is to allow you to have 2wd only in hi or low, 2wd in low is extremely useful for working with trailers on hard ground, the problem is when you are in low range the transfer box is locked in 4x4 mode. and if you are on hard ground it will break something if you force it around a corner. there are various ways to mod the system depending on your electrical abilities. the easiest way is to fit a switch to the feed from the tccs fuse to the controller. the more complex version is to wire in two relays and a resistor.

what I have fitted is a three way switch with two LEDs, one green one red, in 2wd mode the green LED is on, in auto mode it is as normal, (auto no LED) with the switch in the down position the red LED is on this is in 4x4 fully locked position and also the 4x4 picture on the instruments light up. you might not know it is there because it only comes on when there is a fault with the controller. I have redirected the wire. these two extra functions (2wd & 4x4 fully locked)are independently selectable regardless of the high low selector position.

Sounds fantastic but I wouldn't have a clue how to do that lol. But you said that the green 4x4 light (on the dash) only lights up if there is a fault with the control box? I only as this because. The other month it snowed quit heavy yes snowed. The sorrento was out of control. I had to set off in second gear or it just spun the wheels and went sideways. The 4x4 low switch dose nothing at all no clicks no lights nothing. I took my sorrento to the kia dealership after a bill for £100 THEY told me they were 80% sure the transfer box was at fault and could fit a new one for £3,000 the car sorry Suva drives beautiful so I find it hard to believe the transfer box is at fault and so this thread begun

Sorry mate great to hear from you hope you are having a Google time. Anyway yes all fuses Google power across all the big fuse under bonnet good only 5 volts to back of selector switch (auto and low 4x4 switch) but from there on in nothing but kia says that a today or tcc? One is not listed on the register plate for my cat but there must be an ecu that controls it? Got the photos you sent very helpful in felt in the position and it feels like there is something there but due to work haven't had chance till the weekend to have a proper look

Hi Birdman,I was reading about the TOD on /off switch somewhere on this forum.I have a EX 2006 2.5 Sorento diesel (which is great for towing our caravan around)It has Auto 4wd and Low.I like the idea of 2wd on the rear but on the odd occasion be able to use 4wd when needed. My understanding is if i pull no13 fuse marked TCCS put an inline fuse and switch in then i can have TOD on or off.Does this mean i would have to stop to activate TOD ?I`ve no history if the oil in the transfer box has been changed though i do get the car serviced annually. This is my 1st 4wd so totally new to all this.Any help is much appreciated thanks

If it has not bee serviced by Kia dealer, independents probably do not know it needs Kia TOD oil or a friction modifier adding to it.
