08 plate 2.9d GS with 46k on the clock

Just filled up for the first time £74.42 to do 352 miles, I make that about 29mpg. My trip to work is about 35 miles round trip so £7 a day!!

Any suggestions? a lot of this was school runs and town, but a fair bit was 70mph too.

Any common issues? I've got a fairly light right foot!

Injection system cleaner? chip change? sell car?

Help

Well what do you expect from such a big beast with a 2.9 engine.........
I dont travel long distances, more rural, 10-20km distances, school runs etc......

Before i fitted one of our own PowerBox's, it averaged 26mpg....on a run 32/34mpg.

After fitting the PowerBox we get averages of 32 local and 36/38 on a long run with c/control and aircon on.

I keep it well serviced, no brake binding and oil/filters changed every 5K.

Added to the PowerBox i have fitted a K&N panel air filter which makes it a lot smoother, no low down lag and accelerates like a much lighter car........

I am not pushing our product, but please take a look;

If you want supermini economy buy a supermini and not a seven seater with a 2.9 diesel of the old school that weighs probably 2 tonne. Under similar use our old Mondeo would have done about 36 mpg and the Sedona is a lot bigger and way more powerful. Don't honestly think you are doing too bad, the official combined is 36.2 and while there is a "y" in the day of the week you ain't going to get anywhere near that, no-one does. You are managing about 80% of the official which is exactly what we manage and what I always budget for when buying.

you say old school engine, but its not that old being common rail (when compared to the old mechanical diesels)I would've thought a bit more than 29mpg, but there are too many variables, driver, road, vehicle etc
someone else could drive your vehicle on the same route and get more, others less.
What figure was you hoping for?

You say your light footed at 70 M P H????? that is not light footed! that is the maximum speed that you can drive in this country!!!! light footed could mean 60 mph, try it next time you will be pleasantly surprised, oh, and cut the school runs out. I have managed to return 30MPG average over 1500 mile travel while towing my caravan, and I have managed 40 mpg solo (long distances)

Sorry !probably just an over reaction to first fill up, last time I saw fuel consumption figures starting with a 2 was in a 2.8 Capri (Don't ask it was a long time ago!!). I'm used to a Laguna 1.9dci which has a similar size tank and would get to around 600 miles on a tank. May need to have a rethink and find a cheapy for the commute and save this bus for the school runs and times when we need all that space. Will drop down to 60mph for commute, maybe invest in a flat cap and driving gloves too.

Hi Mate - I thought I was on the wrong Forum when I saw your post ! I usually come across your posts on the Vec C site. Welcome to the Forum.Like most people have said 30mpg isn't bad for a 2.9 diesel - only thing I would consider is check that the brakes are not binding slightly - I had this on my 2006 TS which affected the fuel consumption - did a mod and it greatly improved - worth bearing in mind!
Its a good engine in the Kia (get a lot less problems than on my 1.9 cdti Vectra)

I call the engine "old school" not because its a bad engine but simply because it does not use the current hi-tec control systems etc. Yes its common rail but it still an engine Kia have been using since the early 2000's. When I bought the Ceed Ford were selling a 1.8 TDCi in the Mondeo and S-Max that dated back to the mid 80's but had been brought up to date with its control systems, in the early Mk 1 Mondeo it was the most hateful diesel I have ever driven but in the new Mondeo and S-Max it was actually surprisingly good. The current Sedona uses a 2.2 diesel that is more powerful, has more torque and according to the official figures way better economy. Personal experience has conclusively proved that the current generation engines ofall the brands I have experienced are way more refined as well.

You are actually doing way better than I originally thought, the combined figure I quoted was for a manual, the official combined for the auto is 31.4 mpg. That means you are within 10% of the official figure and if the rest of us could achive that this site would have a lot less posts on it.
Enjoy it, there is no other MPV that offers so much for so little, just way too big for our drive/garage and if I bought one (manual of course)the wife would want another 2 dogs to fill it.

Beg to disagree Viking Paul. At the £1.339 per litre (price I paid yesterday) you would get 74.68 litres, divide by 4.546 and that is 16.43 gallons. IfSedona1961 used exactly the £100 in 511 miles he got 31.1 mpg.

I did around 1500 miles last year touring scotland and just keeping up with traffic I got 41 mpg over the whole trip , so it can be done depends on the right foot and dont brake heavy
