To be fair to both my dealer and Kia - I got my Optima SW on the 31 October, I had asked both the dealer in advance if the car would have CarPlay. Both stated very clearly that it would not BUT they were hoping to have it available in the UK market in Q1 2017 and there was a likelihood that there would a charge for this addition to the specification.

To date that is exactly what has been the case

If it was sold with Apple CarPlay then you have recourse in my opinion, if not then it is an upgrade/ addition to spec and therefore you have the option to take it up at a cost or don't...
There is no update to these head units to add Carplay or Android Auto, it's not possible on the MY16 sportage. I agree a charge is acceptable in this case, it's a big improvement. However, my gripe is with the "No info available" bug that's existed since day 1, they have fixed it in the latest version, and i think it should be free as it was broken before. Just my opinion of course!

I've just bought my wife a top of the range 3month old Citroen ds3 demo car with all the bells and whistles,
but I'm shocked it doesn't have Apple CarPlay and can't be upgraded either,
Even the sales manager was surprised that it didn't have it as its a 66 plate motor and it's got virtually every extra available ,
he made some enquires About it and apparently that's a factory order optional extra and wasn't specified when it was ordered,
They said that they'll do the satnav map updates for free for as long as they do the servicing but can't add apple play ˜¡˜¡˜¡

Aye, they've fixed the info - but not the station logo! ˆ

Today I took my Nov 16 Optima SW into my local dealer for the software update appointment I enquired about from their receptionist a couple of weeks ago.

Straight away, I was disappointed to learn that the update was only an engine management one, nothing to do with the Apple Car Play addition. When I made the appointment, I imagined that, as I was informed that there was only one update showing for my model on their system, it would be the one providing Car Play - my fault for not asking the specific question!

Ok, I can live with that but when I asked when I could book the car in again for the Apple update, the receptionist told me they know it exists but they haven't received an SD card yet so can't provide that. He quickly informed me that it is not free - there is a ÂŁ25 charge - (you don't say!) On asking if they will notify me when they have the means to perform the task, he assured me they would notify me as they have my details on their system.

I deliberately left it a couple of weeks after reading in this forum that SD cards were being rolled out to the dealers, thinking I'd do well to miss the initial rush of lots of owners clamouring to have the job done. What I don't understand at this moment is: How long does it take to supply the dealer chain with SD cards? I have no idea which method of delivery Kia UK uses for such things but I can get just about anything I want from the likes of Amazon or eBay and in many cases, take delivery the next day.

I shall now be interested to see if I do receive any further contact from the dealer but I am already thinking that when my servicing time comes around, I shall entrust the car to another dealership. Equally, if any warranty work should be required, I may well look elsewhere. I shall be fair though and give them a chance to contact me but if they don't, I really don't see why I should provide them with any work which puts money in their pockets from the parent company.

Like many others, I have waited patiently for news about the Apple Car Play modification since purchasing the car last November when I was assured by the selling dealer that it would be available in Q1 of 2017. This is not the smooth start to my Kia relationship I had hoped for.

Hi Indalo

We're sorry to hear this dealer weren't in a position to
arrange the update. All dealers should
have received their SD cards around 3 weeks ago.

We understand you're giving the dealer an opportunity to
contact you; however we're keen to find out what has happened so would
appreciate a PM with the dealer name. We can then come back to you to confirm.

We hope this suits you.

Hi KCSYou have no idea how timely this thread is and I really hope you can cut through a lot of conflicting info

I bought my march 2016 Soul EV last Saturday it was previously the dealer demonstrator registered in March 2016.

I specifically bought the Soul EV over an alternate EV e.g the Nissan Leaf because I require RTTI which is a feature of Google maps and may also be available via Apples Car play Maps as well.
RTTI can make up to 40 minutes difference on my commute to work so is extremely useful

On Saturday I specifically asked the salesman if the latest firmware and maps had been installed prior to collecting the car. yes he said.

Imagine my disappointment on arriving home to find no sign of it.

So to cut to the chase, exactly what do I say to the Service Manager at Premier in Dukinfield to ensure the car receives the correct and latest update when I return it to them later this month?

There must be a technical bulletin issued to the dealer re these updates please post that ref number here and I will direct him to your reply on this thread.

The version I have in my car is posted below.
I think it would also be helpful to explain the numbers if you can
I am assuming the info in the SW version suggest mine is date 5th Feb 2015 is that correct?
but I have no idea what Quarter or Year the map version equates to!

Do you publish release notes or version histories anywhere?

TIA

A Second question is this update purely via a new SD card or must it go on the Dealers GDS System?
To return to the dealer is a 150 mile round trip and an entire day lost for something that was available and could and should have been done prior to my collection if your earlier post re availability to the dealership is correct

If it can be posted who do I buy it from?

My local Kia Dealers in Chester or Shrewsbury won't touch the EV with a Barge pole even if warranty work is required which I actually think is truly disgraceful and I would love to know if they are 'supposed' to be saying that or just taking the pee.

TIA

Hi Kieth,

Doesn't say much for the dealers mentioned!

I live in Dukinfield and have from Premier a Niro 2 and I can speak to them on your behalf and will put the results on here tomorrow. I will make sure to them, that you have a soul EV.

Yours Peter.

Last post for tonight nosing about my SD card

My map is ver EUR.07.48.65.001.001
The SDS.ENV file header contains these dates:

//VERSION INFO EU.ALL.PR.140522
//LPDB NAVI VERSION INFO VDE_20140617
//MAP VERSION 13Q4

That to me reads as Q4 2013

Am I right?

No need thanks,
I spoke to the service Manager this afternoon he originally said my car was not compatible because the hardware in the 2017 model year to enable car play is different.

I do hope he is wrong and he said he would check. They simply may not yet be aware of this latest version. plus with only about 300 of these cars in the UK they probably don't get this crop up that often :)

I would like KCS to reply to my first post then that should categorically get it clarified.

They might even have the courtesy to speak to to Premier on my behalf just to ensure everyone is on the same page.

Hi Keith

Thanks for the post.

From the versions you've listed, we can see this was
last updated in 2015 or the first half of 2016. Please see the following 2017
versions which your EV can now receive to be fully up to date:

System
version: E517.160926

Navigation
version: ST4.EUR.KMC.160905.96731

Map
version: EUR.09.41.43.712.001.1(D.C1/E.C1)

The bulletin reference is AS/SD/170308 and your service team will need to refer to the AVN
4.0 Quick Reference Guide for your model. The Soul EV can receive this update
by SD card but this can only be done on dealer premises.

Regarding app compatibility, the EV can't be
retrospectively made compatible with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay. The EV has
a different setup which doesn't allow functionality. We're sorry we can't
support these apps in your model.

Finally, a Soul EV owner can take their car into any Kia
dealer for servicing. Whilst a handful of dealers have ""ËśEV Specialist' status,
this applies to sales. All dealers are expected to offer servicing for EV and
they have the support of our technical team to do this. If you experience any
issue booking in with a dealer, please give us a call so we can discuss with
them.

We hope this helps.

Hi Keith,

re Premier - (www.premier-car.co.uk) the person to ask for if you ring - leave it a day or so if possible - (0161 343 2216) as the workshop manager 'Steve Evans' he is a bit busy overseeing the stuff for a large rebuilding they are having done.

I would suggest sending the photo (above in your post) to start with (addressed to Steve) and include the information from Kia as well so he can check : ask the best time for you to ring - that way he has prior info. re what you are ringing about.

Hope the above will help.

Yours Peter

Thanks Peter I knew he was a Steve 'something or other' they have already arranged to collect my car later this month. Unfortunately between my agreeing to buy it and then collecting it last weekend it seemingly picked up some damage to the front nearside wing and bumper and a chip at the rear so it is going in the bodyshop.

They will therefore have plenty of time to apply the upgrade whilst in their care.

I will drop him an email with the info from KCS above so there is no ambiguity these things are often a lot easier to resolve once the correct language for the requirement is known.

Thank you very much for the prompt reply I will provide the info to the dealer in advance of my visitDo you mean the functionality is not available period on the UK Soul EV or not available on cars built before a certain date?
A general comment to those querying the cost of these updatesÂŁ25 is cheap, stupidly cheap the Map updates for my BMW 5 Series are an order of magnitude higher than that.So think positive look at it differently, you are buying a service therefore a contract to supply exists between you and Kia for that service. If whilst on site they cock it up you are I would hope in a better bargaining position than if it was being done as a 'favour' for free. However having said that it is a shame other parts of the world get it, not exactly free but effectively bundled as part of the purchase price of the car for X years that would obviously be a genuine incentive to future buyers.

Hi Keith, i agree it's a fair amount to get updated maps etc. I only want a bug that's existed since day 1 fixed, i don't even want the updated maps. I just want the head unit to work as they designed it to, and have patched now. Edited by: markhig2

So technically then you want the firmware updates done FOC to see if it resolve your bug.I think it would be reasonable to ask them to do that under warranty.

If it doesn't then no harm done and you don't suffer the indignity of paying for a failure or acting as a guinea pig.

You might then in your renewed enthusiasm for the marque decide the later maps are worth having and buy them after all i.e treat it as two completely separate transactions.

I know for certain the firmware can be updated whilst leaving the old maps in situ because a Dealer in Ireland has just cocked up and done that very thing today ;)

Disclaimer:

The words cocked & up is meant as a reasonable assessment of a screen shot I have just seen and in no way reflects the reality of what may or may not have happened at the anonymous dealer when updating a certain blue Soul EV.

I still think it's a wrong to charge for map updates. I don't know what the cost is now, but when I brought my first Venga in 2012 it was around a ÂŁ1000 more to have the sat nav version. I brought the version without sat nav. At the time I had a Tomtom which was around ÂŁ70 and I was paying then ÂŁ19.99 yearly for 4 updates. Now a days you can buy a new top of the range Tomtom for under ÂŁ300 with free life time world wide maps updates. The software updates are always free.
So how can Kia justify ÂŁ25 for one update which are out of date.

Their justification has always been that you are paying for the dealer's time in installing the update. If so, for me the unanswered question is why these updates cannot be provided in a form for installation by the user.
