I will finally have the gearbox out of my 2004 2.9 diesel next weekend.
there is no drive when it is placed into 3rd and 4th gears.

I suspect the 3/4 shift rod or fork has failed in some way (roll pins) as the rest of the gearbox is fine.

Anyone got any advice on taking the gearbox to pieces and putting it back together again?

Such as gaskets, sealants, roll pinsetc.

Cheers all

Once you have the end cap of the gear box off and removed the lock nuts holding the shafts down, it will bw a struggle to remove the casing due to the bearings. You need to gently lever the casing up and knockdown the shafts or make a tool to sit across one shaft ie; a thick metal plate and drill holes in it to line up with the holes in the caseing where you just took the cap off. Then pack out underneath the plate and tighten the bolts down to liftthe caseing up. Be careful the bolts will sometimes pull out the threads aor snap part of the caseing, periodically hit the plate over the shaft with a hammer to shock the bearing.
Good luck.
