Can anyone offer up advice on what may be causing my issues with my 1999 Kia Sportage, 2.0 lt diesel . In the past month I have had rising RPM without acceleration at random and times. Occasionally while driving and occasionally at idle.
Yesterday it would not start. First time problem. Turns over fine but won't fire up. It would occasionally fire up for a second then die. Got it to fire up twice. But it reved up to 4000rpm on its own. (So i turned it off).
Finally got it to start and running well drove it for half an hour with no problems. Half a day later, same problem.
Have heard it could be crank shaft sensor. But why would this cause the high RPM.
Could it be fuel pump (tank) or fuel distributor? (Engine)
I'm stumped.
Any advice....

Most likley causes are the throttle body actuator or associated sensor. Often a good strip and clean will sort it.

Any diagnostic codes?

Not buying the crankshaft sensor theory - that makes no sense.
