Jools TBH i think you are being a bit to extreme in your persuite of the golden MPH. All i go on is how much fuel i put in to go to work. Five days a week at 40 mile a day round trip, costs me £20 (half a tank). Compared to my £45 to £50 a week in my Sadona. So when i see my fuel costs are less than half, that will do me, regardless of MPG.

Jools
Sorry to say but you are expecting too much. You say your journeys are 2 or 3 miles, the engine will never warm up and during the winter (even when its mild) the car takes longer to warm up than in summer. The car will improve as you do more miles but short journeys are not good for fuel economy. If you did longer journeys you would see way better figures but in reality I don't think they are too bad considering your type of use, I would be happy. |

A quick update. I have the 1.0 three-door, and for this tankfull I have tried to achieve the best fuel economy I can. I have been concentrating hard on eco-driving, and the on-board mpg reading is 62.9, while my calculation from the miles travalled and litres used is 66.516 mpg. It was very difficult and boring, so I'm looking forward to havinga a bit of fun again.
![]() Driving was mixed town/ B roads, some night driving (lights make the economy a bit worse), some day, Bridgestone Blizzak LM20 Winter tyres (soft compound, cut treads, not as low resistance as Summer fuel saver tyres) at 37 psi, BP 95 RON, oil is Shell Helix Ultra 5W 40 fully synthetic, no passengers, no luggage. I'm guessing the real figure for normal driving will be low to mid 50s mpg. |

Okay, I've now finished that tankfull. I drove smoothly and didn't waste momentum, but didn't use the extreme eco-driving techniques I did on the previous tank. According to the meter, I got 59.4 mpg, so not as bad as I expected it to be.

I'm hoping it'll get better in Spring, with warmer weather and re-fitting the standard Hankook energy saving Summer tyres.

Well the current average mpg, on the car with the new crankshaft fitted, is coming in at 40.7mpg.
