I have been doing a bit of research on the official consumption figures and they are not to be believed, for any car!
It appears the official EC test figures are 'massaged' by the manufacturers to reduce CO2 emissions and consequently affecting the Vehicle excise Duty ratings. Those test results bear no relation to the real world and few, if any, drivers can get near them. If you have a look at www.honestjohn.co.uk/realmpg you will get all of the information you need. I am 'breaking in' a new Venga 1.4 petrol (420 miles on the clock) and have just averaged 33 mpg in the 3 weeks since we got it. Hoping for greater things as it loosens up but certainly not expecting anywhere near the official figures. I also wouldn't trust the Trip MPG figures either. I used to get around 9 miles to the litre for previous car (11 year old Zafira 2 litre turbo diesel) so anything approaching that would be fine. Also, don't use supermarket fuel. Use Shell V Power petrol as it gives better economy and protects the engine. Might cost a little more but it is worth it in the long run. Good luck and stick with it.

Hi Borderer, my experience is very similar to yours, and agree on your comment on Shell V-Power. I cannot believe mpg figures quoted by manufacturers, they are a complete waste of time and cannot be relied on even as a comparison, as some are less a figment of their imagination than others. In this day and age 33mpg is not a great return for a car this size. Weight should not be an issue in this age of lightweight materials of a comparable strength. Perhaps tweaking the EMU would help. I have driven a Golf, Citroen C4 and Jazz of comparable engine size with better fuel economies. It has been a real eye opener switching from diesel where 55-60mpg is the normal from a 1.6 unit, and I have to remind myself not only of the differences in fuel price when filling up, but also that I don't have to worry about DPFs and dual mass flywheel repair costs 3-4 years down the line.

Good afternoon, We thought it might be worth clarifying the figures that are quoted for fuel consumption by manufacturers (MPG).
The figures are compiled under test conditions, on a rolling road. The sole purpose of the quoted figure is to enable you to compare one car against another. Essentially, this is the only way to get a truly comparable figure and this wouldn’t be possible if all cars were tested on different roads, with different drivers, under different conditions. The test is witnessed and approved by the Department for Transport. Although the quoted MPG figures are achievable, a common misconception is that they will be achieved regardless of driving style and road conditions etc. This is not the case as these variables will all have an impact on the MPG. Suttonseven raises a very valid point about working out fuel consumption. Performing the calculation after a brim to brim test, using the same fuel station, pump and filling angle is the most accurate way of working out the MPG the car’s achieving. More information on fuel economy data and legislation is available at www.vcacarfueldata.org.uk Our dealers are always there to help so when you’ve had the car a while and hit the 2,000 mile mark, if you still have some concerns over the fuel consumption, it may be worth you having a chat with your local dealer.
