Hello,
 
I got a new Picanto last week, and I'm really enjoying having my first new car! The thing is, that I'm not sure if there is a problem with a clutch. It feels different to my (very very) old car, but I'm not sure if it's just different or if there's something wrong with it.
 
Basically, there seems to be a bit of 'give' in the clutch, before I can put pressure on it. So, in my old car, I could rest my foot on the clutch and it wouldn't move at all until I pushed, with the Picanto, even resting my foot on it pushed it down a certain amount (around an inch) and then to push it down further (and engage it) I have to put pressure on.
 
Is this how it's meant to be or is something wrong? (I realise you're not meant to drive along with your foot resting- it's a habit I'm trying to break Smile )

Welcome to the club. Its not good to rest your foot on the clutch pedal while driving in gear as this puts pressure on the release bearing and your clutch friction plate will start to slip and wear out fast.
The give in the pedal is free play before the clutch starts to disengage. The free play should be 6mm to 13mm.
If its a petrol Picanto you have then its a cable, the diesel Picanto has an hydraulic operated clutch.

Sounds normal, the clutch is not a foot rest.

Thanks, it is definitely more that 13mm, I think I might get it checked out as I have to go in to get one of the buttons fixed next week anyway. I've been practising driving today with the foot rest and getting used to it surprisingly quickly- noone ever told me you weren't supposed to do it! Luckily with my old car, it was much firmer so didn't cause any problems (although everything else broke in the end).

Also remember the clutch plate is made up off friction material and will need time to bed in, the same as your brakes.
After a few hundred miles it will feel different.

i have a brand new picanto and i didnt "ride" the clutch but it did need a few hundred miles to bed in

I can't find the bit in the manual where it tells you how much the free play should be- is this the same for all cars or is it written somewhere that it should be 6-13mm? When I mentioned it when I bought it, the salesman said that it was fine and just different to what I was used to- I'd like to have some proper figures to back me up- the free play is a couple of inches, which makes it so uncomfortable to drive (I'm starting to get used to not 'riding the clutch', but my foot keeps catching on the clutch when I move it from the rest as it's so high up!)

It's a petrol car. I've read the manual from cover to cover twice and it's definitely not in there!
