Hello all. Ive got blue smoke coming from the exhaust when accelarating and have been told the cause could be leaking Valve Stem seals. Has anyone had these changed before and was it expensive? Many thanks in advance.

it might be stem seals but there are also other things that can cause it as well, the most likely culprit will be the crankcase breather, the gasses are piped back in to the air intake, along with these gasses you get oil mist that builds up in the intercooler, this oil builds up and is drawn back in to be burnt, engines with higher mileage breath heavy and as a result more oil mist. try giving it a right good flogging while watching in the mirror, you can sometimes clear it by doing this but if it is the breather it will come back unless you let the pipe vent to atmosphere, it might also be the turbo starting to pass oil, I would not go near the stem seals, the car is too old to warrant this level of labour.
