The Kia Sportage is one of the nicest looking SUV's on the road and I took delivery on one last year for that reason, I have noticed over the last couple of months severe wear on the drivers seat so much so that the leather is torn but what alarmed me more is that the leather is like paper, the grade of leather used is of very low quality, Kia says that they have no problems of this nature recorded.check these photos out http://www.flickr.com/photos/cmgroup/sets/

It seems that this is a common issue, so who ever told you that they have no record of this, is probably telling a few lies.
As Kiaman says, checkout this thread.

I am sorry to hear of similar problems with the seats I am a firm believer that Slovakia maybe the culprit leading to the bad quality, Hyundai's i35 is built in the same factory and in many respects use the same parts as the Sportage so I have no doubt we have unsatisfied owners of the i35 as well, if I opened a can of worms I apologise in advance.
